Government invited ASUU to a negotiation table on 16th of August 2022 but it was learnt that ASUU rejected the award of salary presented to them by the Ministry of Finance, Budget and planning. ASUU released a memo on the 18th of August 2022 stating Why they rejected the offer presented to them by the Federal Government. Read the memo below

SUMMARY:

Lol... so last minute, FG don yahoo ASUU again, to the detriment of students. They're trying to set up another strike action by next year, which ASUU has rejected.

1. They agreed to the implementation of the salary component of the agreement, but with a condition that the implementation would commence in March 2023. You & I know that the election would have been concluded & they'll be on their way out. So they are setting ASUU up against the incoming government, for another round of strike. ASUU refused & asked them to do a supplementary budget. FG refused.

2. They left and came back with a fixed paltry salary which was never part of the negotiation. This will ultimately set ASUU up against the incoming government for another renegotiation of salary. ASUU rejected it because it violates the principle of collective bargaining. We can not agree on a thing, & you go and single-handedly change it and force it on me.

3. The major target of ASUU is to prevent anything that would lead to another strike in the foreseeable future. That would be better for both students and the University system.

Why didn't ASUU include it in their press release that they asked FG to pay them the backlog of their salaries for the period of the strike to be paid during the strike but FG refused?

What I don't understand with this "no work no pay" policy is their refusal to pay lecturers on full time study fellowship. Lecturers on full time study fellowship are not expected to work until completing their studies, so why deny them their salaries?

It's the same union,
Guilty by association.

The policy is no work no pay, not about being a member of a union or association besides there are few academic staff that are non ASUU menbers.

I understand your point.
This is not an organized system, FG already classified them as one.

There are labour laws and government cannot cow ASUU with intimidation. Government goes into agreement and refuse to implement. The government has to set priorities rather they spend money on frivolities. ASUU too should bend corners and accept half payment for a job not done. I foresee this strike will drag on because both parties refused to agree. Just disheartening to be a Nigerian.

Even as Nigeria is a third world country, no strike should linger on for more than 4 weeks.
Anything longer than that is counterproductive, don't forget this strike also has an indirect effect on the economy, the areas of transports and people with businesses around the campuses.
My own stance is that FG should pay ASUU their salaries, but we must also remember that ASUU don't always shy away from incessant strikes and dragging it on for as long as they like because they have the guarantee that they will get paid sooner or later.
Also i doubt if there's any Labour Law that supports paying striking unions salaries for 6 months out of work.

The belief that they will still get paid is why you hear ASUU boasting that they don't mind going on strike for 2 years, without minding the implications on others. If they know their salaries are also at stake, they will be ingenious and find alternatives.

If the FG decide to stick with the "no work no pay", this could amount to two things. It is either ASUU demand that the backlog of their salaries be paid or forget about their six months salaries together with the backlog of work waiting for them if they resume ( since the FG is insisting that they don't deserved to be paid). What this implies is that ASUU will forget about the old session and resume with the new session.

Lol
It's still the same routine for ASUU,
Supervising
Marking
Setting questions etc
You are just suggesting that ASUU should repeat some or all of what they have already done.
The students will lose time, which they are already used to and ASUU will lose 6 months salaries which I'm sure it's the card they didn't anticipate from the government.
Previously, they always get paid their backlogs whenever they resume, that's why ASUU president was boasting then that they don't mind waiting for 2 years to reach an agreement with the government.

My point is this: when FG emphasizes on non payment of backlog of salaries, they should also remember that there is a backlog of work waiting for ASUU members except they are suggesting that they should proceed with the new session. If they should, you will still need somebody to take care of those uncovered session. For instance, most schools are still in 2021/2022 session (first semester), once the strike is called off the lecturers will resume from where they stopped. Now, assuming ASUU decides to forfeit the six month salaries and refuse to continue with the 2021/2022 instead insist on proceeding with 2022/2023? What happens to the students? In all these, students together with the parents remain the victims. The FG really need to find a way to resolve this impasse before it results in total collapse of the education. Don't forget that some schools are still battling to cover their curricula owing to the 2020 strike which lingered for nine months. Also factor in that we have on standby two sets of jambites waiting to gain admission. Very soon there will be call for another sale of JAMB form.
This is not the time to play politics with the future of our younger ones. Both parties should find a way to resolve this issue. Right now, some of my friends who lecturers, in the guise of postdoctoral fellowship, have left this country. We don't need such brain drain right now.
