2023: Rerun Likely Over Emergence Of Obi, Kwankwaso – US INSTITUTE by ManirBK: 4:27pm On Aug 19, 2022 |
The 2023 presidential election may go into rerun with the emergence of Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi and candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Rabiu Kwankwaso, an international delegation of National Democratic Institute (NDI) and International Republican Institute (IRI) have said. The United States-based institutes said the 2023 elections would be a departure from some of the political dynamics that defined previous polls in Nigeria. The delegation of the NDI/IRI, which visited Nigeria on July 13 through 22, led by the Secretary of State for Ohio, Frank LaRose, stated these while presenting its first joint pre-elections assessment statement to journalists in Abuja on Friday. The institutes, which described the duo of Obi and Kwankwaso as a viable ‘third forces’ said their emergence as presidential candidates for the 2023 elections has excited many young Nigerians. They noted that if a third party draws sufficient support, a runoff presidential election could be a real possibility for the first time since the transition to democracy, adding complexity to the 2023 elections.’ Maintaining that the 2023 elections present a significant opportunity to consolidate Nigeria’s democracy, They observed that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is now better positioned than in past elections to take on the logistical and administrative arrangements necessary to organise elections for 85 million registered voters. The organisations said, “The 2022 Ekiti and Osun gubernatorial elections, the first elections held since the electoral law was passed, demonstrated the positive impact of initiatives implemented by INEC since 2019 to improve results transparency, including the introduction of the INEC Result Viewing Portal (ReV) and elimination of voting points.’ “Other improvements include the adoption and proper configuration of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) for voter accreditation, which has quickened the voting process and reduced tensions in polling units.’ “The recent surge in voter registration numbers and increased voter turnout in the 2022 Osun polls, especially among young people, point to a renewed interest in political participation among Nigerians. “However, there are questions about whether the 2022 Electoral Act will be fully implemented and whether political parties will take advantage of this increased enthusiasm to engage Nigerians on issues that matter to them. There are also questions about whether these new technologies — IReV and BVAS – would perform at the same level when scaled up for the national elections.” The institutes said while there had been some positive changes since the 2019 elections, stakeholders with whom its delegation met expressed concern about the direction of the country. According to them, confidence in the government and elections has declined over the past 10 years,’ as exemplified by the #EndSARS movement that gained traction in 2020 to protest security forces abuses.’ “In addition, insecurity has deepened, spreading to every corner of the country, extremist and sectarian violence continues to spread, banditry and criminality are endemic, separatist elements are gaining traction, and informal security forces are proliferating. “This intensifying violence takes place against a backdrop of increasing religious and regional division permeating the political discourse. If the 2023 polls fail to improve upon past elections, Nigerians may lose faith in the ability of democracy to deliver,” the organisations warned. They called on the government to allocate remaining funding to INEC, saying this would ensure completion of procurement processes, training, and deployment of necessary staff and materials. According to them, INEC should extend the period for voter registration to capitalise on excitement from the Osun and Ekiti elections and nomination of final presidential and vice presidential candidates. “The courts should be allocated sufficient funding to ensure members of Election Tribunals have the necessary resources for training, transportation, and security. “INEC and security forces should anticipate and plan for areas where violence may be used to suppress votes/change outcomes. The government should formally address the role that informal security outfits (such as Amotekun and Ebube Agu) may play in the lead up to and during elections. “The government should resolve the Academic Staff of Union of Universities strike. This is critical for security, as young people unable to study could be easily recruited into cults, gangs, or other groups that could contribute to electoral violence,” they added. https://guardian.ng/news/2023-rerun-likely-over-emergence-of-obi-kwankwaso-us-institutes/ mynd44 oam4j lalasticlala seun |

I don't know which data they are privy to but my hard guess is that it would not lead to a re-run. And even if it does, either Atiku or Tinubu will emerge and not RMK or PO. That is the sad reality some people are unwilling to accept |

ManirBK:"...The pent-up emotion from many Nigerians is understandable. For many of them, the failure of the APC-led government and by extension the party is unimaginable. It could be felt in the level of hardship in the land, the hopelessness of its economic policy, the frightening insecurity, and the zero premiums attached to the sanctity of human life in the country, among other indicators. APC is certainly faced with the difficulty of packaging the presidential candidate, currently enmeshed in several storms. It is also battling with the hard-sell Muslim-Muslim joint presidential ticket option, which is almost becoming an insoluble teething challenge confronting the party. From all indications, apart from the sentiments of religion and ethnicity, the level of bitterness against the APC-led government has continued to build up to a boiling point...." https://www.sunnewsonline.com/2023-tough-challenges-for-apc-as-campaigns-begin-next-month-2/ 1 Like |

This US Institute wrote the electoral amendment act that was passed into law. Senators didn't know the full interpretation of many clauses they passed. The HOR knows nothing about most clauses even after passing the amendments. It was the office of the Attorney General and the Ministry of Justice that took the time to preview the clauses, read meaning into them and told Buhari not to sign it. |

ManirBK: Tinubu can't beat Atiku. At best it wud be a run off btw the duo. Though I see only one of the duo in the run off. Atiku is likely going to win atleast ten states in the North with majority votes. He will secure 25% in rest nine. No southern candidate will secure majority votes in more than five states and 25% in same. Atiku challenge will be in the South especially in the SW, he may struggle to get 25% there but wud achieve same in five states in SE and SS. Tinubu will struggle to achieve 25% in the eleven states in the SE and SS. 2023 dynamics will surprise Nigerians. North ain't smiling after the APC disaster. |

Your first disposition is that we will die without them......you think American hospitals are the only hospital in the world.....do you know Canada and Cuba have a better health care system than the US.......or you think America is the weapon supplier. In the world?..what we have is a symbiotic trade relationship and should either country exit that relationship both I repeat both will suffer........ |
Re: 2023: Rerun Likely Over Emergence Of Obi, Kwankwaso – US INSTITUTE by slivertongue: 7:21pm On Aug 19, 2022 |
Indispensable85: Notice the North ain't talking much. We know those on ground. Buhari is seen as a religious leader, an Al mumin. Atiku is seen as a business man and politician. Buhari with the support of Muslim clerics gained prominence and eventually won elections but he is not a politician. He is no match for Atiku politically who was disliked by the clerics but Buhari's failures has made the clerics politically irrelevant. No Northern state will outrightly reject Atiku. 25% of the votes is the least on a bad day. But with APCs failure it's Atiku, Obi, Kwankwaso that is on the mind of the people, Tinubu is also there but hardly talked about cos he is part of the APC train of disaster |
