NEWSLagos: Breakdown of ex-governors’ pension as signed by TinubuPublished on November 10, 2020 By Wale Odunsi
The revelation that Nigerian governors live the best lives in and out of office is no news; what is interesting is the disparity and differences in individual entitlements.

Despite poverty, youth unemployment, neglect of babies and the aged, infrastructure deficit, underdevelopment of rural areas, high debt profile, and the likes, many states have continued to pamper and enrich ex-governors.

To maintain the lifestyle, their ‘excellencies’ and deputies get posh houses, expensive vehicles, paid vacation, medical insurance, and protective services.

According to the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), at least 22 states have passed laws allowing payment of life pensions to former governors and other ex-public officials.

They are Abia, Akwa Ibom, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Borno, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, Gombe, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kogi, Kwara, Imo, Lagos, Niger, Osun, Oyo, Rivers, Yobe, and Zamfara.

SERAP has been a strong advocate for an end to the huge remittances.

In March, the federal government asked the body to send a list of former governors and ministers that have received and/or receiving pensions.

Abukabar Malami, Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice said the request was to ensure compliance with a court judgment on a suit by the rights group.

The AGF’s letter with ref: MJ/LIT/ABJ/CMC/661/793 was signed by Anne C. Akwiwu (Mrs), Director of Civil Litigation and Public Law Department in the ministry.

Lagos was reportedly the first state to implement the pension law. It was signed in 2007 by then Governor Bola Tinubu weeks before he completed his two-term tenure.

Tinubu, a former Senator, is the national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the party under which Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and President Muhammadu Buhari were elected.

On Tuesday, November 10, Sanwo-Olu announced that the pension law will be repealed.

He made the disclosure during the 2021 budget estimate presentation to the House of Assembly.

The Public Office Holder (Payment of Pension) Law No 11 Official Gazette of 2007 states that former governors are entitled to a house each in preferred locations in Lagos and Abuja, the nation’s capital.

Section 2 reads: “One residential house each for the governor and the deputy governor at any location of their choice in Lagos State and one residential house in the Federal Capital Territory for the governor on two consecutive terms.”

The law provides for six new cars every three years, 100 per cent of the basic salary of the incumbent governor (N7.7million per annum), and free health care for the beneficiary and family members.

Former governors will be entitled to furniture allowance – 300 percent of annual basic salary (N23.3million); house maintenance allowance – 10 percent of annual basic salary (N778,296); utility allowance – 20 percent of annual basic salary (N1.5million), and car maintenance allowance – 30 percent of the annual basic salary (N2.3million).

There is also an entertainment allowance, 10 percent of the annual basic salary (N778,296); and a personal assistant who will earn 25 percent of the governor’s annual basic salary (N1.9million).

A former governor is also entitled to eight policemen and two Department of State Services (DSS) operatives for life.

The above clearly shows that the institutional bogus allowances for former governors started with Tinubu. Despite what he stole as a governor, he insisted on a pension for life. Imagine a state like Lagos with 3 or more ex governors, each collecting these bogus pensions despite the fact that civil servants who have served for 30 months or more are starved of their well deserved pensions.
Voting in Tinubu will be the worst thing to happen to Nigeria in modern times

He wants to be President.
His wife is a Senator.
His daughter Iya Loja controls all monies and levies generated in all Lagos markets.
His son, the advertising guru of state account is in charge of all billboard money generated in Lagos.
All B.R.T money goes to his Nephew.
His wife who is a Senator is the official supplier of diesel in all Lagos State formations, including street light generators.
All governmental taxes and other levies goes to the criminal JAGABAN himself through his consulting firm called Alpha Beta.
He own a mega private hospital inside the state teaching hospital in Lagos.
His newspaper and T.V channel are the official paid propaganda channels.
He own almost all the remaining valuable real estates in Lagos.
He's entitled to pension 300% amount payable to governors which is a law he created by himself.
He's entitled to change of vehicles yearly and houses both in Lagos & Abuja (minimum 5 bedroom duplex).
All his domestic staff, cooks, gardeners, stewards, drivers, securities etc - are all paid by the government and are all pensionable.
He directly controls all the machinery of government in Lagos and some southwest States.
Unless there's something else that is wrong with you and your head, what else is he looking for in the Presidency?
If he had managed all the resources and States he controls very well, we should be the ones calling him to be our president.
Goddamn delusional old man.
And some poverty striken & tribalistic urchins are still foolishy & blindly campaigning for this same criminal who has looted Lagos State dry, and who is also responsible for their poverty.

Nigerians know what all these men represent.
However, our biggest challenge is that everyone wants their tribesman to be president, even if he is coming to empty Nigeria's treasury.

Trust me, if you tell them that their tribesman didn't do anything, they will use whataboutism by giving examples of those who did nothing. Nigeria is too populous, unenlightened and diverse to work.

More reasons why we should vote the right candidate during the Presidential election. He has looted Lagos state dry, imagine what he will now do to Nigeria.

If Tinubu mistakingly wins this election, the suffer we're suffering under Buhari will be a baby compared to what we will suffer under Tinubu. The level of that suffer will be Grampa.

But why is Obi highlighting that he's not collecting any pension from Anambra state government when it's not in the law. And he's sounding like he's the one that's rejecting it .

You no get sense before na. If you did, you'd realise that it wouldn't have cost Obi much to get his state lawmakers to pass this criminality exercised by your lord into Law as well.
He's not just a jegudujera thief, else he would have done the same.

By the way I weep for kids who will have your sort as a father.

Yoruba lokan in the mud.

Swallowing their commonwealth like a G.P tank.

While his fellow colleague in Peter obi did not burden his state with ordinary pure water allowance.

If someone like peter obi governs Lagos, with the resource available, they will never vote apc again.

He was Impeached for refusing to play ball.

The state assembly would gladly give it to him because it means he is going to allow them loot too.

Now other governors have long copied this corruption pattern that is just fleecing their states just to sustain the expensive lifestyles of his fellow corrupt ex-governors?

How will such a money-conscious man that allocated such a humongous budgetary allocation to funding his lifestyle after government not tell the Buhari government to print more naira notes as the impulsive solution to the economic hardship of the COVID-19 pandemic?

Did he propose a bill for it and was turned down by the state assembly?
No.
He's highlighting it so Nigerians can see Tinubu for who he really is. All the money Tinubu is being paid as pension is more than enough to build several world class hospitals such that he won't need to travel abroad for medical check up.

If not for tribalism and personal selfish interest, I don't see any tangible reason someone should be supporting this man for presidency.
Comes 2023, am not just voting for good governance but against bad governance,
These people take us for fools.

Tinupoo needs to be arrested for the endless heist he has been conducting on Lagos State finances since 1999! It's too much.. Federal government needs to step in and save Lagosians from the evil grip of this monstrous kleptomaniac.
Quite unfortunate that Lagosians who like to see themselves as the most sophisticated Nigerians, are the ones being played like mbolombolo..

This old man is far too criminal and self-centred. And this is the man who, according to one idiotic politician, will fight corruption. It would be Tinubu if corruption was a person.

I don't support tinubu but some how I kind of feel he should win this election, reason being that from the look of things I don't think Nigerians have suffered enough to learn from their mistakes, by the time tinubu gets to power and severely deal with Nigerians and the economy, maybe just may be then Nigerians will learn to vote for competency and not be separated along religious or tribal lines, some times people need to learn the hard way otherwise they keep repeating the same mistake, a lot people who supported buhari have learnt their lesson and now again we still have people who are hell bent on putting tinubu into power, las las na all of of us go suffer am, yoruba, igbo, hausa, christian or muslim......ride on, if peter obi looses in 2023, i will humbly accept my fate.

oga who rejected it? Some of you will read without comprehension, every state governor who wanted to adopt the criminal bogus pension schemes have done that, obi was among the few state governor's who refused to implement such charade into law and you still find away to blame him for his inability to be corrupted by an evil system.

People like you are clear example of everything that is wrong with this country

Never believed in what a nigeria politician is saying.

I will continue to say it ,those who have refused to chose a stand are part of the problem, they are supporting our oppressors.

You won't see them on this thread.
