IVLP alumna trains 20 women journalists on digital and fact checking skills

Kofoworola Belo-Osagie, International Visitor Leadership Programme (IVLP) alumna, Edward Murrow programme for journalists on Monday trained 20 women journalists in Lagos on digital and fact checking skills.

Belo-Osagie during the opening ceremony said that the training aims to help 20 women journalists in various careers stages bridge the digital divide and gain Fact-checking skills to check misinformation and disinformation.

She said that a limit was applied to the number of participants to ensure adequate support and ample benefit from the hands-on training.

She said that the choice of women as beneficiaries of the training was informed by the discrimination that women journalists face in the newsroom.

She said that in many media houses in Nigeria, few women occupy positions in senior management.

Belo-Osagie said that participants were nominated by the National Association of Women Journalist (NAWOJ), various media houses among others.

"By gaining specialised skills that help bridge the digital gap, the journalist will expand the army of professionals in the media, news, information space.

"They will also better fight fake news and produce much needed quality content that support societal development.

"The training will focus on mobile journalism - video production/social media, podcasting and Fact-checking over a three-day period" she said.
