End of the road for Mikhail Sergeyevich.

He wasn't responsible for the downfall of the Soviet Union. With the benefit of hindisight, the Soviet Union was already in trobule since at least the 1960's...if not earlier (If the then secretary general is telling the head of the USSR space programme in the 1960's that there isn't enough cash for a manned lunar project....something's up. Meanwhile, the US had unlimited resources.).

Problem with the USSR was that its economy was based on state monopolies that were protected from competition. (By contrast, American companies were not, which is why their car industry was no match for the Japanese, and Europeans...those guys innovated, the US slacked off). And then the profit motive was not there. When your reward for being a hard worker is a medal and a handshake...productivity suffers

The oil boom of the 1970's just postponed the evil day. By the time the 1980's came around....

At the end, if you want a successful economy....allow people to make money. Don't take over the rich and poor man's property in the name of equality...while making life misreable for all.

No doubt. The world would have been a very different place, in a negative way, were it not for his actions and concessions.

Mikhail Gorbachev, a man with a troubled legacy.

In the eyes of the West, he is a reformer, a man who "brought down the iron curtain" and helped destroy the Soviet Union.

In the eyes of the Russian people, he is seen a lily livered betrayer who sold out his country to the West in the name of vain promises and a pot of porridge.

The truth is that Gorbachev was naive. Despite the failure of Glasnost (openness) and perestroika (reform), there was still hope to save the Soviet Union and translate into a China style Quasi-Socialist state under the banner of communism while introducing private ownership (right to own property).

However, Gorbachev allowed the Western stooges Yeltsin (Russian SSR) and Kuchma (Ukraine SSR) to run circles around him, disregard the referendum of 1991 which was in favour of not dissolving the Union and then stupidly accepting verbal guarantees that NATO will not threaten Russia after the breakup of the Union.

Gorbachev failed to do any of the above and the rest they say is history.

The current Russian Special Military Operation in Ukraine, is as a result of the failure of Gorbachev to preserve the Union thereby giving NATO a foothold into Eastern Europe.

Nonetheless, his fight is finished. May he be forgiven and rest in peace.

With that scar that looks like a map on his forehead, the face of this man was the face of the Eastern bloc then before USSR broke up.

He is a different man to different people.

Whether he is Hero or Villian depends on where you stand but he has done his own and gone on to rest.

To the rest of the world, he's a hero and they're forever in his debt. Russians though have mixed feelings about his legacy.

While some accuse him of whittling down Russia's might in favour of their adversaries, others think he taught a good fight trying to infuse the country with real democracy and capitalism. The nuances are as many as there are faces.

Whatever it is, he remains a towering image amongst his peers and likes. Hardly can you find the leader of a superpower admit faults in their system. He did that, opening the gateway to the resolution of what would have been the worst nuclear disaster the world could have witnessed to this day- who knows, maybe there would have been no world left for us to inherit.

May the gods favour his soul.

Go tell Putty Putt that and he'd have your head on a spike in the Kremlin before dawn. grin

Vlad hated his guts and blames him solely for the collapse of the Union.

In fairness to Vlad, he may not want the Soviet Union back.

After all while he did say that anyone who does not miss the USSR has no heart, anyone who wants it back has no brain.

I'm not sure any Russian wants to go back to subsidising half of Europe and a big part of Asia on their dime, even those who wish the USSR was back

You might wanna say that, but it takes just tasting with the tip of the tongue before taking a mouthful.

If you think Vlad isn't desirous of a resurrection of the Union, what exactly would you say his incursions into Georgia (effectively splintering the country, with the two breakaway provinces being nothing but appendages of Russia), and Ukraine represent?

Forget the smokescreen of them being aversed to NATO and its activities in Eastern Europe and taking deliberate actions to halt that. It is my belief that behind the curtains, Vlad is simply testing his military might preparatory to what his real intentions are- the reunification of USSR- or at best, something very close to it.

It might be a long shot but you certainly can't out anything past that old KGB fox.
