The Cable themselve admitted that Lagos is the fourth largest economy in Africa.

So what is actually the difference between 3rd and 4th? That’s just a slip by 1 position.

So much for fact checking.

Read Well they said the state itself claims to be the 4th Largest.
This is the actual position; No 11.
TheCable compared Lagos to other African countries using the 2021 data. Using the official exchange rate in converting the GDP numbers provided by LBS and NBS, Lagos ranked 11th in Africa and 16th going by the parallel market rate. GDP figures above are from the World Bank, with the exception of Lagos, which was extracted from the LBS."

Lol, for people that wants to know, they knew Lagos state was receiving allocations but the local government weren't.

But let's ask some questions.

Who has the highest numbers of employees between state government and local government in Lagos?

Were the salaries of local government workers paid during that time they weren't getting allocation?

How were local government health center financed during that time.?

Were local governments road maintained during the period?

All Primary schools teachers that happened to be local government staffs, were they paid?

Were responsibilities that were solely for local government abandoned during the period they didn't receive their allocations?

It is hoped that with this clarification, no zombies should ever peddle the lie that Tinubu ran Lagos govt without federal allocation for 8 years because it was allocations for the illegally created LGA/LCDAs that were withheld but even @ that it returned when the SC ruled on the issue.
No,it wasnt.
It was returned during HE Fashola reign.

Brother no need for insults please. I believe they want to be lectured and that can be done peacefully. Just ask them if local government worker were paid or not when they were receiving allocation or were there any local government responsibilities that were not met during that period. If none, then who was paying for it then. I believe their mind will open a bit after that and those that still have a closed mind will look for another excuse and rest on this flimsy one. Thanks

I don't know the Economist who came up with the ideas of GDP and GNP, but I think those figures are just another useless estimate that government officials use to measure wealth.

If you really want to know the wealth of a state, do proper census and develop a robust database to capture everyone in it. Track what they do, give a social security number, make it illegal for people not to have one, and track their earnings and divide it by the population of the state. This is called Per Capita Income (PCI).

For me, PCI is the most convincing technique for measuring the wealth of the nation or you use the $2 per day benchmark to measure poverty index, not some useless GDP or GNP.

Of course there is spin everywhere in politics.

For one I know that of revenue is not true because I knew that private sector led revenue drives aka tax consultancies started during the dying embers of the Babangida years and really took off during the Abacha years when government allocations nose dived on account of low oil prices and international sanctions.

And by the time democracy emerged most states including Lagos had viable private sector led revenue streams.
No doubt the Tinubu led government and others have successfully widened the tax base but Lagos was earning close to 4 billion when he assumed power in 1999 and took over the consultancies through his proxy company Alpha-Beta.

1. JOHANNESBURG (SOUTH AFRICA): $276 BILLION
Fittingly, Africa’s richest city was built on gold – on the Witwatersrand Gold Rush of 1886, to be exact. It’s the commercial capital of South Africa and the wider region.

2. CAPE TOWN (SOUTH AFRICA): $155 BILLION
The city with Africa’s highest prime residential rates, at around $6,100 per square metre (similar to DC or Berlin) also is an important hub for financial services, retail and tourism.

3. CAIRO (EGYPT): $140 BILLION
Real estate, financial services and construction are some of the key sectors in this city of 9 million, the biggest metropolis in the Middle East.

4. LAGOS (NIGERIA): $108 BILLION
It may no longer be the country’s capital, Lagos still is the gateway for 80% of Nigeria’s exports – and the centre of the burgeoning film industry, a.k.a. Nollywood. At 21 million inhabitants (2016 est.), it’s Africa’s largest metropolis, as well as one of the world’s fastest-growing cities.

5. DURBAN (SOUTH AFRICA): $55 BILLION
Subtropical Durban is South Africa’s third-biggest city (after Johannesburg and Cape Town), second-biggest manufacturing hub and biggest port, as well as a major tourist destination. Durban’s Gateway Theatre of Shopping is Africa’s biggest mall. It has 12,000 parking slots, 390 stores, 90 restaurants, more than a dozen movie theatres (including an IMAX theatre), a skate park designed by Tony Hawk, and the highest fountain in Africa.

Lagos is not 3rd but 4th. What is the difference?

That is the difference between truth and politics.
Lately other politicians have been called out about facts v spin.
This is just another case.
Politicians lie a lot. That is why democracy is not all about what they say but what they do.
The former is what ignorant citizens put their hopes on and will always be disappointed, the latter is what informed citizens work towards by advocacy.
In practical terms, that Tinubu has raised revenue profile in Lagos does not translate to it happening in Nigeria unless Nigerians work it out for him. That Peter Obi will be fiscally disciplined as he was in Anambra does not mean it will happen in Nigeria if Nigerians will not team up with him to resist the establishment which is traditionally known to be profligate.
We should all understand how democracy works.

And by the way, biggest economy does not in anyway translate to any tangible benefits if the average Lagosian is not better off than citizens of other States. And I have not seen this in basic indices of living because the structure of the country does not permit independent economies.
