Ex Judge Advocates For Christian Courts In Nigeria: Like Sharia Courts by Lanquart: 7:37pm On Aug 10, 2011
A former judge of the Court of Appeal and Chairman, Council of Legal Education,Justice Moronkeji Onalaja, on Sunday advocated the establishment of ecclesiastical courts in Nigeria.

Onalaja said this while delivering the maiden annual lecture of the Cathedral of Saint Jude, Ebute Meta Lagos, titled ‘Christian Ethics and the Rule of Law.’

He said that ecclesiastical courts would help in resolving disputes in Christian fold.

Onalaja said, “If there is a breach of a Christian law for instance and you report to the bishop how is he going to determine whether he is innocent or guilty of the allegation?

“As we have the Islamic law that is enforced by sharia courts in the country then we should allow for the agitation of ecclesiastical courts to be established in the country that would challenge the breach of Christian laws. I think the machinery should be set in motion.”

The guest lecturer also preached love among Christians and Nigerians in general. He also educated the audience at the lecture on the workings of the rule of law for the sustenance of the current democratic experiment and the for the promotion of peace and unity among Nigerians.

He noted with utmost dismay the way and manner in which the impeachment clause in the constitution has been applied since the beginning of the current democratic dispensation.

The programme was sponsored by the Young Men Christian Union in commemoration of the YMCU 70th anniversary.

We already solve disputes in the church internally. There needs be no organisation of a formal legal structure for Christians to settle disputes as Christians are too denominational. A Wesleyan Methodist can never respect the decision of catholic clergy, neither can an Anglican respect the decision of Cherubim and Seraphim clergy.

Interesting!  But don't all those denominations use the same Bible (Old and New Testaments)?

Very strange idea to me. Less religion in the government, not more.

Lame! Just because Sanusi and co are going crazy about religion does not mean we should join in their madness.
And this is coming from a judge?

So we can all see where this country is inevitably headed if courts, banks, government and politics are increasingly split along religious lines. Those who sow to the wind,

the civil law as we know it, is an off-shoot of christain religious doctrine which got infused and indoctrinated into civil society. There is no point in re-inventing the wheel when we already have capable laws as it is. cool
Re: Ex Judge Advocates For Christian Courts In Nigeria: Like Sharia Courts by Nobody: 8:50am On Aug 11, 2011
Unfortunately, most churches do not adhere to Bible authority.e.g gay marriage, premarital sex, political involvement etc.they follow tradition of men which jesus condemned in matt 23.all these churches are false.

The Judge might not be blamed after-all.

I a country where its laws are determined by the Northern Islamic oligarchs.

This country Nigeria is already split along religious line, we all are just pretending to be one and forcing ourselves to stay together, even the future has no space such entity. Whether we accept it or not the boundary is becoming so glaring for all to see and as the pot continues to melt, our difference will continue to become bolder and inevitable. Issues like this will continue to emanate untill we ''the South/Christians in this country'' grow the balls to say this illegitimate marriage is over. Religion is a very strong thing especially in a country where the muslims are close to 40 percent. There can never be peace until their Holy Book becomes the law and constitution, if not they will be regarded as lesser muslims who are still under the rule of infidels. BokoHaram is a very good example, yet we still seat here taking everything with a pinch of salt. On a final note, the Igbos and the Yorubas are a perfect match despite whatever past between them which were all a path in our process of learning,. Their competition even here is a healthy one, as each tries to be the Eagle among Eagles and that's the sure path to a progressive nation if well managed. Each are a motivating factor to the other and have coexisted peacefully. The north is due for secession, let Ghadafi's solution prevail and see how fast we's rise to a super nation.

Untill we face this TRUTH Nigeria will continue to deteriorate and naturally fall apart.

Haba, my dear Learned one. Are you just angry at the existence of Sharia court  in Nigeria or you sincerely desire a Christian court?
Re: Ex Judge Advocates For Christian Courts In Nigeria: Like Sharia Courts by hostsleek(m): 10:14am On Aug 11, 2011
Pls let us rest in this country at-least without any religious noise,

Religion has scattered this country into nothing,

Three is a very bad number especially where a complex interplay of religion and ethnicity is involved, that's why Nigeria will never work. Two is a good number that's why South Africa is doing fine.

Oya, Lets apply elimination method cos i'm just tired of this version of 9ja. Over 70 million people out there just like me feel dsame. Nigeria needs no remedial incrementalist approach but rather a radical one like southern Sudan.

Democratic Republic of Southern Nigeria (DRSN), i long for thee!

Doesn't the senile old fart remember that the New Testament does not prescribe any Christian punishments for earthly sins? What happened to 'judge not'?

Does he not realize that even murder will be forgiven by the court with a "Go home and sin no more" sentence?

I forsee a massive influx of crocodile shedding criminals, giving their lives to Christ and repenting in court while their bewildered victims look on  grin

EDIT: I just saw his name is slowpokekeji Onalaja. No wonder grin

Every body just want to talk. from the example he gave-it doesn't make sense cos churches already have that capacity internally. The Christian Law is simple:The ten commandments(from the Old Testament) and offenders will be told_Go and sin no more, your sins are forgiven(from the new testament) anything less will be imitating the Sharia law.
Finally I really don't think Christian court is necessary.

The Ten commandments are Judaic laws not Christian laws.

Perhaps, this retired judge should be investigated to find out how many innocent muslims he might have sent to jail in retaliation for "Sharia"

Naaa at all bro I know the man very well, he is of sound mind, rich enough to look after himself, has kids all in high places and doing very well.

He is also one of the very few left retired Judges with upright principles @ 77 years old

If u read between the lines u will deduce that all he his saying is that the Sharia people should thread softly and not over power/impose themselves over the rest of the citizens. Giving them a bait to see that we also have a way out but we are not doing it that awy.

Sometimes when an elder speaks they drop it like bullets but the wise words are inside the bullets.

Justice Onalaja is not loosing it, That I know

Onalaja had been a journalist, having served as the foundation editor of the Nigerian Monthly Law Report (NMLR) from 1964 to 1976.

He was happy that Justice Onalaja was leaving the court in "good health and with untainted reputation."

Excerpts:

Why do you think Chief Gani Fawehinmi would want his chambers closed in his death?

In my view, he did it basically on principle. It is well known that he attached so much importance to his name and his principles. This was what happened when he was not given the rank of the Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN. He had promised not to apply again, but he was prevailed upon by some people, including his driver, Mr. Ajibade, whom he consulted over the issue. He only applied when he was pressured by the likes of Justice Oputa, Justice Onalaja, Justice Moni Fafiade, Justice Oguntade and Chief Mrs. Folake Solanke, SAN. He listened to them so well, before he finally decided to reapply.

You can see that Justice Onalaja is a man of good reputation,
