I agree with you. Even taking politics out of the matter, my personal observation is that the lifestyle habits of the average Nigerian adult male and female does not predispose him/her to optimal health once above age 50.

Too much alcohol, smoking, consumption of oily food, red meat, starchy diet and lack of exercise/physical activity raises the risk of heart, lung and organ diseases.

You raise a good point. Nigerians are very stubborn and set in their ways but lifestyle changes could see more Nigerians healthier in their latter years.

Some cultures that parade some of the healthiest elderly people, like the Japanese, are that way because of diet and dedication to healthy lifestyles.

Per politics, most Nigerians hide their health status because the truth, as you concluded, is that most are not optimally healthy.

That does not mean they will die tomorrow or will not be able to function effectively in office. Poor health above age 50 is just a general issue with Nigeria today.

We make what is good bad and what is bad good in Nigeria and harm ourselves with that mibdset.

An example is how Nigerian men, and even women, love and glorify fleshy women when the truth is that those women are actually obese and above their optimal weight. They would be advised to lose weight in the West but we see them as the picture of health in Nigeria.

We mock the lean man as "suffering" and praise the Alhaji, with fat stomach, as healthy.

Whereas the lean guy probably has optimal blood flow and general better health because his organs do not struggle working against obesity.

A long way to go in Nigeria and everything, in my opinion, is tied to the lack of knowledge and poor positive exposure of the average Nigerian.

A lot of Nigerians, in Nigeria, cannot see beyond Nigerian culture and societal habits which are often bad and far behind what others adopt elsewhere.
