Students, under the aegis of the National Association of Nigerian Students, on Tuesday, blocked the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Shagamu Interchange, in protest.

The protest is in reaction to the prolonged strike action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

The PUNCH reports that ASUU began its strike on February 14, 2022, with resumption hope still dashed for many students as the union and the Federal Government are still at loggerheads.

In a statement issued to the press on the protest ground, signed by the Coordinator, South-West Zone, and National Public Relations Officer of NANS, Adegboye Emmanuel and Giwa Temitope, respectively, the students said the Federal Government, led by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), was failing in its promises to revamp education.

“There is no point arguing about who is at fault or what is to be done, it is very clear that the rulers underfund education and the Buhari government is failing in its promises to revamp education.

“As major stakeholders in the educational sector, we are the ones who can save ourselves. We have monitored the yearnings of students from campus to campus through their social media platforms and also in their public writings. Students all over Nigeria stand with ASUU. Our lecturers suffer the same hardships and mal-developments we suffer. The staff houses are as bad as the students’ hostels. In South Africa, a professor’s laboratory is far more equipped than that of any university in Nigeria.

“History has been killed and undermined, so we the youths, do not know where we are coming from not to talk of knowing where we are headed. But we will not lament anymore. The new leadership of NANS is here to work with students to achieve our set aims and objectives. We believe that the student movement has its place in history. It is a task that we vow to fulfill. We will never let Nigerian students down!” The statement partly read.

Standing with ASUU, they stated their demands as follows:

“We call on ASUU leadership for a meeting as as soon as possible to discuss solidarity actions and plan for the next phase of the struggles.

“We pass a vote of no confidence on both Ministers of Labour and Education; We call for the proper funding of the educational sector as against what has been attainable in the past seven years; We Call on the Buhari government to pay all outstanding arrears and salaries of the lecturers. The policy of “No Work No Pay” is a fascist one, it’s therefore, condemnable and nonacceptable to all the millions of students in Nigeria.”

The students vowed to mobilise towards shutting down the Presidential Villa if their demands are not met.

And Mr Amoda Ogunlere said that he wants to continue from where Buhari stopped.

A vote for Amoda is a vote for continued ASUU strike, increased terrorism, increased fulanis herdsmen menace, increased power failure.

May bat thing never happen to us

U must hold that BAT responsible..he's the greatest yahoo old boy we have in this country...he decieved the whole nation to vote in a very clueless old man as president, so he shares 60percent of the blame...if not him as he rightly said in his Emilokan outburst, buharia won't not have been president, which means our country won't have been in this mess ...his choice of buharia is evidence he's no longer sound in judgement due to old age...but to add salt to injury, he's contesting to replace buharia...I vote for APC is a vote to continuous negative change APC brought to the country especially ASUU strike

Mounting road blocks is a thing. But how effective would it be?

This is the result of putting incapable people in NANS to represent the student body.

By now, a sensible NANS would have entered a dialogue with the lecturers and the Federal Government.

Issuing threats up and down won't solve anything.

I pray and hope something meaningful comes out of the road blocks.

God,which kind one chance Nigerians enter for this APC government.

How APC is still campaigning is really a big shock to me,with all their failures them still get liver da campaign.

I don't blame them at all, they said if they fail to deliver we should stone them, but zoombies are praising them.

That country is shaking, this might be the beginning of the end. The tension is way too much and right there is the likelihood that Buhari still doenst want to leave. Then also the disappointments post election period also awaits many.

Unfortunately this government does not reckon with protest whether peaceful or not

Neither do they honor agreements

If una stay too long na unknown soldiers go scatter ground

I beg softly softly biko

Go dust your voters card if u no get go get one

Come time to vote, vote a party and candidate with humane face and not tyrants

Our vote is our power

Change is coming. It's already here
