The celebration of the 35th anniversary of Akwa Ibom State creation Wednesday featured expressions of overwhelming joy by residents of Atan Offot and Shelter Afrique areas of the state capital city over the inauguration of newly constructed 35Km of internal roads.

This, as gathered, marked the recovery of hitherto impassable and submerged areas of these communities, hence a new lease of life for the residents.

Speaking at the inauguration of the 3.72Km interconnected Atan Offot roads, the State Governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, affirmed that the completion of the projects bring to a total of 113, the number of internal roads so far constructed by his administration in the state. 30% of these were within Uyo metropolis, he added.

Governor Emmanuel also assured the Atan Offot people of a local market, if the community would provide a land for it. This however, he clarified, will be done through the Family Empowerment, Youth Re-orientation Path Initiative (FEYReP) project of the Office of the state's First Lady, Mrs. Martha Emmanuel.

Similarly, at the inauguration of the 5.1Km Akwatang, Amawo, Mbiabong Ikot Essien, Obong Okon Essien roads and Prof. Stella Idiong Arts Gallery street in Shelter Afrique, the governor said that was the 25th of the 30 internal roads he promised to construct within the Shelter Afrique area, assuring that 5 more were underway and will be completed soon.

The Commissioner for Works and Fire Service, Prof. Eno Ibanga, whose Ministry supervised the projects, assured that the constructions were done to full specifications, with 30 years guarantee.

He explained that Atan Offot roads were completed with side drains and a 1.2Km main drain linked to the IBB underground drain. Also, that due to the terrain, excavation was done before construction.

The events also featured lots of goodwill messages from residents of the benefitting communities and leaders across Uyo.

The member representing Uyo State Constituency in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Anietie Ekah, commended the governor's infrastructural development strides, positing that Governor Emmanuel has surpassed his 2015 campaign promises to Uyo people.

The Chairman, Uyo Capital City Development Authority, Prince Enobong Uwah, who is an indigene of Atan Offot, hailed Governor Emmanuel as lover of Atan Offot people, as he has rescued the area from age long perils of impassable roads and flood, besides the many state projects sited within the area. He assured the governor of the full support of Atan Offot people to him and the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, to reciprocate his kind gestures.

The Village Head of Mbiabong Ikot Essien, Eteidung Hosea Okon, thanked the governor on behalf of the residents of Shelter Afrique and adjourning communities for the respite given to them, describing the projects as life-touching.

Eteidung Idongesit Alfred Ekong also communicate the heartfelt gratitude of Atan Offot people to the governor for his numerous interventions in the area.

Akpabio helped the state by atleast setting some standards in terms of what governors are expected to do. James Onanefe Ibori, Alamasiegha, Orji Kalu and Rochas an Peter Odili them, only set templates for looting in their states.
