Calvin Coolidge, the 30th President of the United States, was known to be a man of very few words. His alarming reticence earned him the nickname “Silent Cal.”

He hardly talks. There are many stories about how Coolidge would attend a social event and leave the event without uttering even just a word.

While a lot of people were disturbed about his unusual silence for a man of his status and office, Coolidge saw it as an advantage.

Some of his favorite quotes about silence are:

"I have never been hurt by what I have not said.”

“You can’t know too much, but you can say too much.”

The funniest story about his silence relates to his encounter with the writer Dorothy Parker.

Dorothy Parker once attended a dinner party where she sat close to the President Coolidge and she told him she had made a bet with another someone that she could force and somehow manipulate Coolidge to utter more than five words over the course of the evening.

Coolidge replied her with just two word: "You L ose"
