1. Not knowing what your readers want

Sure, you might have a manuscript that is more than ready to be published, but if it's not something your target audience wants to read, then guess what? No one will buy it. This can be determined during the research phase where you study the genre and analyze successful authors who are writing in this genre.


2. Not knowing your book's category

This is crucial and can be the difference between success and failure. You need to know which categories sell the best, and we're here to help you with that! For example: If you write a murder-mystery novel, it would probably go in the Mystery/Thriller category.


3. Not pricing your book competitively

This is another crucial step that authors often overlook. Price according to genre and length: if you're writing a full-length novel, you probably want to price around $3.99-$9.99 , where as if you publishing a short story collection or novella, you might be looking at $0.99-$2.99 . Ebooks are competing against each other the same way physical books do – so it is important to price your book accordingly.



4. Not having a professional cover

An unprofessional-looking or poorly designed book cover can be a death sentence for your ebook. People judge books by their covers, so it is essential to invest in having your book professionally designed (and yes, you do want it to look like a traditionally printed book!)


5. Ignoring reviews for your kdp book


The first thing is that your book will be reviewed by readers who have purchased it. These reviews can either be incredibly helpful or they can really hurt your sales numbers.

6. Putting all your eggs in one basket

The most successful authors tend to spend their time on a variety of marketing techniques. Just because one promotion worked for one book doesn't mean that the same method will work the next time around.
