His grandfather was one of the first Jewish immigrants in town, opening up the cotton company Corey & Company in 1919. Alfie attended Purdue University on a football scholarship after graduating high school before returning home to pursue other business interests. In 1958, he took over the family business as president when his father died unexpectedly two years after opening the facility in 1955. He served as president for three decades until he sold the company to Carter Hawley Hale Stores in 1987. That same year, Oakes left Purdue to become a full-time farmer following the death of his son Timmy who was killed while working at an International Harvester plant located near their property.
