Unknown gunmen yesterday killed a soldier at the Ezeagu military checkpoint of the Enugu-Onitsha expressway, Enugu State. They arrived the checkpoint and opened fire on the military men, getting one down and left unhurt.

Today, unknown gunmen killed five soldiers in Umunze, Anambra State.

The South East has become a theatre of mortality. There are some places in the South East that don't deserve the military checkpoint. Their presence there only creates traffic congestion. To go to Enugu from Awka is now tough journey as the military men subject people to trekking pass their checkpoints. There are four of such checkpoints on the Enugu segment of the Enugu-Onitsha expressway where people alight from their vehicles if they are two or more in their vehicles and trek pass the checkpoints. It's an annoying situation.

The South East is over militarised, yet, no security. If the military can be so attacked and killed at their own checkpoints, who's safer? Annoying is the fact that these military men at checkpoints are more interested in harvesting money from motorists. Their attention is focused on that, forgetting to be at alert for in case of any eventuality. Their poor control of the traffic they cause is another annoying experience. Their presence is more of cashing out than focusing on the task of guarding the roads.

May the souls of the forcefully departed ones rest on...
