the key is a symbol of authority right? So Jesus has authority over hell and death.
Keys means authority, when Jesus said he gives the keys of the kingdom of heaven it means the heavenly authority.

Matthew 16:19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

It means he is given the authority of the kingdom of heaven.
With this authority things can be effected in heaven.
Jesus also has the key of David meaning the authority of the davidic throne belongs to Jesus.
In the bible having the keys to something means total control over it.
Jesus totally controls death and hell, when he died he rose because he controls death and he will raise his own when he comes.
