I think a bit of education is required here. First of all it is important to know that mobile phones have different platforms. For a category of mobile phones called smartphones the major platforms include Android, Symbian, BlackBerry, Windows Phone and iOS.

Apple iPhone is based on iOS,
BlackBerry phones run BlackBerry OS,
Motorola, Samsung Galaxy, Sony Ericsson, some HTC, some LG, run Android
Nokia runs Symbian, MeeGo, and will soon add Wndows phone OS to the mix.

So, just because a phone does not run Android those not make it inferior to others. Every OEM chooses the platform to go for and seek license to use it.

There are also phones called feature phones, which if you ask me are smartphones based on my own definition of smartphones which is any phone that can easily download and run a third party application. Nokia feature phones are based on Series 40 platform eg. include the very popular 5130 Xpressmusic which according the Opera state of the mobile web of May, 2011 is the second most popular phone used for browsing internet in Nigeria, second only to another Nokia Series 40 based phone, the Nokia 2700c.

It is also important to note that the top ten phones are all Nokia phones. This gives credence to the fact that Nokia is still the most popular at least for internet enabled phones in Nigeria here is the list:

Nokia 2700c
Nokia 5130 XpressMusic
Nokia 2690
Nokia 3110c
Nokia N72
Nokia 2330c
Nokia X2
Nokia C1
Nokia C3
Nokia 2600c

Some of you may still want to argue that this is so because only Nokia users use Opera mini, so I will provide the top ten phones for United States as quality control. Here are the top ten phones used for browsing the web in the United States:

Apple iPhone
LG VM265
LG VM510
BlackBerry 8520 “Curve”
BlackBerry 9700 “Bold”
HTC EVO 4G
BlackBerry 8530 “Curve”
Alcatel OT-800
BlackBerry 8330 “Curve”
BlackBerry 9630 “Tour”

The problem with some of us is that we read something in foreign tech news sources like Engadget and Cnet and we believe to be true. Just because Nokia is no longer selling so much in the US does not mean it does not sell in Nigeria. Nokia still has the largest user base in Nigeria, so if are an app developer and you are developing for BlackBerry without first developing for Nokia, you must be sick in the head (especially if your target is Nigeria).

Nokia Series 40 is the dominant platform in Nigeria for any serious developer that wants millions to access their application, then Symbian, then Android and BlackBerry should sort out themselves for third place (Android will be taking the third spot soon and maybe even challenge for the second spot).

This is actually the topic i draged with a friend of mine today in skool.which phone model is dominant in nigeria/africa.its laughable when he said tecno.i had to take it serious with him coz i cant stand it.yes tecno is the fastest selling smartphone in nigeria i repeat fastest selling smartphone and for tecno to be dominant in nigerian then it gat go in to small phones with gud quality has its posses in her smartphone and nt d usual chinko tenco of then..as far as nigeria/africa is concern,do not under estimate d strength of NOKIA.d most dominant.
