Health Benefits Of Waterleaf. Waterleaf is one of the most medicinal and nutritious vegetables in Nigeria. It is usually underestimated and undervalued because it is seen as a wild plant that grows everywhere all year round.

It is called ‘Gbure’ by the Yoruba people and is also called ‘Mgbolodi’ in Igbo and ‘Ebe London’ in Edo.

People from Cross Rivers and Akwa Ibom call it mmomoikong (waterleaf). I think its more popular with ibibio and efik, they use it in almost all their soups especially Afang ,Edikaikong and Editan. Waterleaf can also be used for smoothie or made into juice. Both Waterleaf smoothie and waterleaf juice has numerous health benefits.

Waterleaf can also be taken as a vegetable, dried herbs and also as juice(as said above).
Waterleaf Botanical name :Talinum triangulare

Waterleaves are generally good and beneficial to human health. This vegetable contains lots of water and nutrients such as minerals, vitamins, crude fiber, lipids, crude protein, and others which make them nutritious and medicinal in several ways.

The uses are versatile for culinary purposes, and they are used to prepare waterleaf soup, waterleaf stew or sauce, yam, salad, and more.

Below are some of the health benefits of waterleaf

1. It Helps in Digestion

Waterleaves are an excellent vegetable that is 100% healthy for the body even when consumed with the stem, which helps reduce constipation and aid in the proper digestion of food.

Problems with indigestion seem to alleviate when waterleaf is eaten and helps to soften the stool, but when eaten in excess can cause a little stomach discomfort.

2. It Supports the Liver

The main concern when it comes to eating too much waterleaf stems from its oxalate content. Too much oxalate can be unhealthy for individuals with kidney disease. As such, those individuals should refrain from consuming raw waterleaf. Cooked waterleaf has approximately 50 percent less soluble oxalate than its raw counterpart.
