“I think what an average northerner needs is somebody from the north who understands other parts of Nigeria and who has been able to build bridges across the country. That is what the north needs,” Mr Abubakar said in a now viral video.

A former vice president between 1999 to 2007, Mr Abubakar added that, “It (Northern Nigeria) doesn’t need a Yoruba candidate or an Igbo candidate. This is what the northerners need. So I believe I stand before you as a pan-Nigerian of Northern origin.”

Mr Abubakar prides himself as a unifier. However, this charge that the north must vote a northerner goes contrary to the public image of a unifier that he’s portrayed over the years.

Contrary to Mr Abubakar’s divisive ethnic and regional campaign, the 2023 flagbearer of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, continues to charge Nigerians to vote based on competence and capacity and not by regional, religious or ethnic sentiments.

At 75, Mr Abubakar will contest the 2023 presidential election against several contestants, including candidates of the All Progressives Congress and the Labour Party, Bola Tinubu and Mr Obi respectively, who are of southern extraction.

Mr Abubakar has since 1993 sought five times and failed to be Nigeria’s president; failing at party primary level three times and twice in the main elections.

What Atiku should realise is that the country doesn't belong to the North. A northerner is presently the president and the rule of thumb is that a southerner should take over. Attempt to hand over to a northerner poses a serious problem to our moribund democracy.

Yes, democracy is a game of number but at the same time, that is not always the case. The north has numerical superiority but that is just all. Any other superiority belongs to the south especially in terms of resources, both human and materials.

Also, telling the north to vote only northerners will likely polarise the country along that line, and tge rule of the game will not favour Atiku, even if all northerners vote him overwhelmingly. He must satisfy two third of the votes cast per state.

Finally, we Tinubu supporters don't trade insult, we simply explain our position.

Nigerian youths are wiser now.

We have said no to anyone using tribalism to manipulate our emotions, them enter government and loot the country dry while the youths who were fighting and killing each other remains poor forever.

Wake up Nigerians, vote out these old crooks, vote for someone who is attacking the issues afflicting Nigeria, not someone who is heating up the country because they have nothing upstairs.

Very shocking. A part of his speech also was "what the North needs is a Northern candidate". I have never heard this sort of open discriminatory remark from a presidential candidate in Nigeria. Not even Buhari.

Knowing fully well Northern votes alone won't make him president. Buhari got 12 million Northern votes several times but yet couldn't clinch it.
