I think that should be Sonny Okosun, if I remember correctly.

There was an unfinished but funkier version of this wonderful song that was on YouTube, but unfortunately it has been deleted. This song is absolutely wonderful

naptu2:
The base guitar! Those insane trumpets! The back up singers! The message!

Sonny Okosun. London. 1982.

(The trumpets go. Tada tana nana na na na na. And the bass guitar imitates them)

Mother,
You are my soul,
Mother teach me to smile,
Because I'm still a child.

Mother,
You are my life,
Mother teach me to live,
Because I'm still a child.

Mother,
You are my sight.
Mother lead me to the end,
Because I'm still a child.

Mother,
You are my song,
Mother teach me how to sing,
Because I'm still a child.

Mother (mother mother mother),
Show me the way
(Show me the way),
I'm afraid to walk in thee dark,
Because I'm still a child.

Mother and child.

Mother and child.

La la la la la la.

And the crazy keyboard begins.

La la la la la la la

Mother and child

Mother and child.

What an absolutely pleasant song!

Sunny Okosun - Mother and Child (1982).

Oops, been a long time, forgotten their placing in genre. Though, some of those tracks were fusion of rock, Afro and reggae.

Hey, there was this rap group that graced Nigerian music in the mid 80's - probably, I think they came from the US, and released one popular hardcore rap with a lot of metals. They could not break into the Nigerian music industry because of what was perceived then as too western.
I dont remember their name or track but i remember "SCRATCH" was attached to either their name or track, they featured in some Kessinshing HitShow, then.
Can anyone help me with the proper info

This was probably the first rap song by a Nigerian that was accepted by Nigerians. It might be because the Nigerian members of the group were based abroad and it might also be because the group comprised of both Nigerians and Americans.

The group was made up of Nigerians Mr. Kool, Ebony Laoye and Monica Omorodion, and Americans Jedi and Scratch. Scratch had previously worked with the Sugarhill Gang.

Unlike previous Nigerian rap songs, this song had heavy airplay on NTA2 Channel 5 and Radio Nigeria 2.

Dizzy K Falola did a seriously underrated track called "I'll be coming home".
Great thread, sadly it is wasted on many on here who just want to shout Afonja or Nyamiri.
