SW Continues To Measure Development With IGR by OfficialAPCNig: 9:05am On Oct 19, 2022 |
IGR is not part of the Human Development Indices, so it's never a measure of economic development. Why do some Yorubas always gloat over NBS IGR data. The only thing the data shows is that SW is the most taxed region and nothing more. A Maruwa (Keke Napep) rider in Lagos pays over #1,500 on taxes each day which equates to about #45,000 monthly, which is above the national minimum wage. So, the more you tax your people, the bigger your IGR. Countries tax their citizens more when experiencing declining revenue. Economists understand why IGR in SW is the largest and here are some of the reasons: 1. SW is the most indebted region in Nigeria, while SE accounts for less than 10% of the debts of the 36 states plus FCT. 2. SW dominated the list of states in the South with the most bailout funds. 3. SW is the most insolvent (broke) region in the South according to BudgIT data. 4. SW has the second largest number of households in the social register of the most vulnerable households in the South, while SE has the lowest number in the whole country 5. SW has the most malnourished children and children with stunted growth 6. Lagos generates a bulk of her IGR from sea port activities, yet nearly 70% of the cargoes end up in SE. These data shows that SE doesn't need to tax citizens to death. It's already the least indebted and has the lowest number of vulnerable households, so government doesn't need to tax the rich or middle class for poverty alleviation. With all the IGR SW generates, SE is on par with the region in terms of development despite fighting a bloody war for three years. So what do they do with the money? It only means one thing. They are generating the IGR to run the recurrent government expenses and service debt. Dear, Yoruba Nairaland, IGR means nothing. It's not a development indices, but these are: 1. Life expectancy 2. Education 3. Per Capita income 5 Likes 1 Share |

Please don't listen to these northerners opening topics to discredit Tinubu and our high IGR. Look at the table and understand why they are doing this, Lagos can buy 10 northern states and have change from the tables. 2 Likes 1 Share |

Stop making unnecessary comparison and unintelligent arguments. The South West - thanks to Lagos - is the most viable region in Nigeria. That's why it attracts a vast majority of Nigerians from other regions. Besides, you cannot tax a man who doesn't make money. This is the same principle that Peter Obi promotes. That's how it's done elsewhere in the world. The US uses personal income tax to finance their bloated budgets. You can only tax people who have viable sources of livelihood. Therefore, you should be more concerned about what governments and high net-worth individuals should do in the East to make it more viable and attract investments, not blindly criticizing other regions because verifiable data shows they are doing well in revenue generation and development. On the flip side, the big problem with the South West, just like other parts of Nigeria, is bad leadership. A lot of money is generated but nobody accounts for them because it is massively looted. To add insult to injury, governors keep taking huge loans. Those need to be addressed so that people can justify paying taxes. 3 Likes |

I laugh in Spanish. IGR only shows the level of economic activities in any region. You can't tax what does not exist. And if you check the states with the high IGRs they are the most ethnic diverse states which tells a story that people tend to move to places with more economic activities and opportunities for their well being. Data cannot lie no matter how anyone want to spin it. Deal with the truth and let the devil be ashamed 3 Likes |

Goke7:IGR is not a measure of economic progress. Stop parading ignorance. GDP per capita is the correct measure of economic progress. IGR only shows how the people are taxed. It's a very popular quote that no government can tax itself into prosperity. Heavy taxation is never an economic progress. Only God knows the type of education you people received in SW. See capital importation and GDP data and check Abia and Anambra. 1 Like

successmatters:Lagos is the most indebted state. Most of those so called IGR goes into servicing the debts and running the government. Why hasn't Lagos built the 4th mainland bridge? Because they don't have the money for such project 2 Likes |

SmartPolician:Lagos is the economic capital of Nigeria ans former FCT. Be guided. SmartPolician:Are you saying Maruwa and bike riders in Lagos are happy with the amount of taxes they pay each day? They are over taxed. SmartPolician:Do you know not taxing people can stimulate economic growth than taxing them. But why do government still tax people despite knowing this? Because they are short on cash and need money to run the government. The more money they need, the higher the tax and the bigger the IGR. Project this on SW and you'll understand why your government are taxing you to death. SmartPolician:SE already has: 1. The largest concentration of indigenously owned industries per Capita 2. Largest number of billionaires per Capita 3. The lowest debt burden in the wholw country 4. Lowest number of vulnerable households 5. Lowest income inequality 6. Biggest market in Nigeria, which is the largest single employer of labour after the FG. 7. The most nourished children unlike SW that leads in the number of most malnourished children. So, SE doesn't need to tax the citizens to their grave. SmartPolician:SW leaders are not the only looters. All regions in Nigeria have bad leaders. The reason you don't see the impact of those IGR is because they go into servicing debts and recurrent expenses. As far as SW leaders continue to borrow shamelessly, their leaders will continue to tax the citizens, hence the large IGR. If you want to know economically developed region, check GDP per Capita or disposal income not IGR 1 Like |

Goke7:Yes people are over taxed in Lagos and SW compared to other regions. The reason SW governors tax their people is because of their heavy debt. |

It's only an mpuri mriri guided "brain" that will consider a region that makes more money, that is the most peaceful of all the regions in Nigeria, most accommodating to business, most industrialised as less developed than some mudridden, terrorist controlled dump (whose citizens by the way madly rush daily to the former region in question). 1 Like |
