Thank God my sister left over a year ago.
Useless government, people work tirelessly to save lives and yet they are being payed low salaries and even owe them for months. And yet the idiots in House of Representatives who just come to sleep and read paper are being paid millions every month without being owed.

I remember that the minister of labour says we shouldn't worry about Nigerian doctors leaving to other countries at all. In fact it is a welcome development as these guys in diaspora will make returns to develop the Nigerian economy. Moreover he added that the country’s universities will continue to produce thousands of doctors on yearly basis that will meet our health care needs.
Damn,you really are naive

Our lack of organisation is stunning.
We have excess supply of dormant engineers, lawyers and accountants in the labour market. Instead of sustaining the system producing theses dormant hands, why not adjust things from secondary school level? Make more spaces available to study medical sciences and medical related courses. This can solve a lot of problems. More local doctors, more foreign doctors remitting forex crude oil cannot keep up with, better utilization of available minds.
India don't see it as a brain drain as much we do because they have robust educational system constantly adjusting to global market demands. This is how they earn huge remittances from technology and medical science.
We are cursed with leadership in Africa.

India’s huge population of talented youth means that we have enough intelligent minds who can contribute to India from India and to India from outside India. We must continue to develop more excellent colleges/universities and opportunities here so that the best have avenues here and not only abroad. This development of excellence is happening,” Vijay Raghavan, secretary department of biotechnology, told Hindustan Times.

Now the solution is simple

You can use Taxes and study in Nigeria , then go Abroad .

People who go to federal school should be made to stay at least 5 years after graduation before their certificate is released

They contribute their quota before you japa simple

This will pay for the taxes you used from the federal purse.

The cost to study medicine abroad is in your pocket and not subsidised by the govt.

This is not the only disaster for the medical sector.

People die daily for want of infrastructures in our national hospitals. And doctors association are not ASUU to insist that government funds hospitals to be able to help them care better for the citizenry. When they have made those requests, we the public have crucified them.

For any medics that care about saving lives, this itself is a disincentive. To have to see patients die because of lack of electricity during surgery or because of lack of ventilators or lack of manpower. It’s stressful already for the doctors.
aside the financial incentive that is also lacking.

To cater over 200 million people can be overwhelming. It’s difficult not to accept the offer to work in any other clime.

There is a disincentive to remain in Nigeria. And I am sure that more than half of the remaining doctors are evaluating their options. Several countries want their services, and would compensate them for migrating.

Be grateful for the ones left here.

That said, me think , many of those who studied biochemistry and other related courses are capable of being medical doctors. but understandably, the resources in terms of capacity of medical schools are not just there to help train them. It’s like you have to be an extraordinary genius to get into medical schools in Nigeria public universities. Yet I have seen those who cannot beat 180 in jamb, travel abroad and are now medical doctors.

I have seen parents that believed in their children’s capacity and the result is that they are practicing doctors today. Now, many of those that should be medical doctors because of lack of infrastructures have had to study interesting courses, that is little relevant to what we need in the country.

Again, the point is that the FG subsidised education is very competitive & limited that it shuts out thousands of good enough candidates that could easily endure the rigor of getting MBBS.

And as a nation, as earlier said, we are headed for disaster. The few healthcare personnels trained by the subsidised FG education are been enticed by opportunities abroad and they are moving out in thousands.

It is important that the FG provides incentives to curb this and also increase our capacity to produce more medics.

Our universities have to be empowered to take in as many medical students; this way, folks may at least be guaranteed access to basic healthcare & will improve the scary ratio of doctor / patients currently prevailing.

No reason, why the FG shouldn’t make provision for graduates of related disciplines to do a 3 or 4 yrs course in a specialised medical school for the award of MBBS.
You write incredibly well.
Re: Brain Drain: Nigeria Left With 24,000 Doctors – NMA by Jman06(m): 10:37am On Oct 20, 2022
Government needs to stop playing politics with key sectors like education and health!

Dissolve all the so called governing councils of the health and educational institutions and let the respective ministries work directly with managers of these institutions, under the supervision of government and nongovernmental regulatory agencies. These institutions' managers also need to be carefully selected and should be those with relevant managerial trainings and experiences. They shouldn't be restricted to people from a particular profession .

This way, it'll be easier for funds meant for these institutions to get to them and be utilized for the purposes they're meant for.
It'll also be easier for workers in these institutions to have their welfare needs known and attended to directly by government.

If we cannot directly privatize these institutions, then all the political bottlenecks should be removed. The last ASUU strike has made me to understand that it is the 'local' politicians in the various governing councils of government institutions that frustrate government efforts and cause us to run in vicious cycles without progress.

Blame the Nigerian Medical Association for the short fall. I could remember in 2006/7 they told all University should not admit more than 100 Doctors in all Federal and State University they said they don't want people to disrespect their Profession... because of that many people lost the opportunity to study medicine especially if you are for Biological Science....
Out of 100, 60 man no man ...20 V0vp's list the remaining 20 extra ordinary people whose Prayers got answered ...
Before they graduate 30 would drop out 5 may even die.. you're left with 65 ...Yet they're rarely placement for this 65Doctors in Federal Hospitals...50 would use their NYSC alllowee to jet out of the country then the country is left with just less than 5 Doctors

Drs renew their practicing licence yearly.
It's very easy for the NMA to know what number of Drs are legally practicing.
The licencing board also has to write a note for Drs travelling abroad, I believe. So they do have the figures

We can only hope that the federal government will rise to this call and promote the healthcare system before we are left with no or few medical personnel’s in our dear country.
This is actually a light to what we need right now, a 3-4 years advanced program would have been so good provided the applicant is already in the system.
But the question is…Will medical personnel’s agree to that?
Remember everything is just by the books and consistent practices. ……SDG3

Fact here is that medical education here is cheap compared to foreign countries. Medical education in the US is at least 20 thousand dollars yearly. While the FG subsidizes it to about 60 thousand yearly for Nigerian students. Now these students who benefited leave and be of use to another country. That is totally unfair to the country that gave almost free medical education.

That's not the point...

Even if they paid through their teeth to study here, they still won't remain here due to factors you have chosen to ignore!

Stop ignoring the root causes of this brain drain!

It's not just the poor or low pay! What about working conditions?!! What about security of lives and properties?!! What about infrastructures?!! Etc!

Not everyone is greedy for money to the point of going through the insulting and ridiculing process of emigration just because of mere pay difference!

Yes you have some strong points. However i am also thinking of thousands that would be left to die on medical emergencies. Medical education is a platter of gold in Nigeria compared to elsewhere.

You are right, but not being fully objective!

Charity won't pay bills... These medical workers have families and mouths to feed. They also pay to upgrade their skills, just in case you think their training ends after just 6 years in school.

This is also beyond the health sector... The best brains in IT, Law, Accounting, Engineering, etc, are also leaving!

This shows a gross failure from the top of leadership!

The way forward is to address the root causes of these departures as a matter of urgency and emergency!

For starters, why do your leaders train your doctors at such "subsidized" rates, yet none of them uses the services of these same doctors and hospitals here in Nigeria?!!

Let's start from there!

Your points are topnotch

Sometimes I even wonder if our government have an agreement with foreign nations to help them train medical practitioners in exchange for their loot being kept with them

Cos I don't see any reason why a responsible government wouldn't have declared a state of emergency on health sector as it is now sad
