I am Igbo and I would like to gain greater understanding of the word akata as many say its a slur but others say different. Some say it means wild cat, stray cat, lost or whatever. So what does it actually mean?

Akata mostly refers to non white, African foreigners especially black Americans and Europeans

Oyinbo - Caucasian

Akata - Blacks not residents in Africa like Black Americans, Jamaicans, Carebeins, Black Europeans

Kora - Arabs

It might actually be true cos me and my brother killed one very black cat.. I mean very black and scary looking cat back then at the village and when we asked for it's name no one knew except gor one of the elders who told us its Akata fodo-fodo and which like you said might actually be a panther

Akata means a wild cat that does not live at home. It is supposed to be an endearing term for those we lost to slavery. However, it has been weaponized as derogatory, a slur in fact.
It is better not to use it for African Americans if you want peace.
