Bro, I need your advice, as well as the advice of other developers and engineers on this forum.

My question can be summarized in this simple statement: I don't want to waste my fuçking time!

My goal is to get a job and make money. Period! I need to know the best learning trajectory to follow to attain that goal.

Cognitively, I'm not an average person. I dropped out of medical school, and then dropped out of an engineering course few years later. I can't disclose the reasons for this. I'm in my late 20s and I can't go back to school. I have an IQ of 138. I'm intelligent and I can understand complex concepts and provide solutions to difficult problems.

Last month, I got a new laptop with great specs and I laid out my learning path in this order:

HTML
CSS
Sass/Scss
Bootstrap
Tailwind
Javascript
Reactjs
Using styled components, CSS Modules and React UI libraries
Redux
Nextjs
Gatsby
React Native (for mobile apps)
Git
Nodejs
ExpressJs
Postgresql
Typescript
Python
Php (laravel)

My goal was to learn all these, build a great portfolio and begin applying for jobs. It's been a month and 18 days and I'm currently learning React. I built a couple of applications using vanilla JavaScript and after that I moved on to React. I have over 500 different courses and projects based tutorials on my hard drive on the aforementioned languages. I'm learning fast and enjoying the process. But I don't want to waste my time..

What would you advise me to do? Should I continue on my learning path or are there some stuff I should shove aside. What should be my focus?

What languages have the highest job opportunities for someone like me without a degree?

Front end seems a bit too saturated. Too many people doing it and I don't want to be a needle in a hay stack. But I've already invested time and resources into learning and I also enjoy it.

Your thoughtful reponse will be well appreciated.

You are a fool. I didn't tell you why I dropped out but you hastily concluded it was my own deliberate decision. If money isn't the goal what else should be? You can wrap it in whatever illusory bullshit you want, but in the end, we are all trying to make money.

If you don't have anything of value to say, then shut up. If I asked this question on Reddit or Discord I'll get better responses, but you Nigerians will never want to help your own. Someone needs advice and you are insulting and cursing him.

Please look for one of my threads and just follow it. As of when I started learning to code in 2020 jamstack using react WordPress and Shopify was really the rave and it helped me get my first role. Things have changed now cause even where I work we tend to use more backend as a service platforms now. Stuff like strapi and directus.

Hmmm you are on the right track. Interviews are more biased now to data structures and algorithms rather than take home projects. In 2020 when I was learning I got more of take homes than DSA even the company I work used to do take homes but we now do dsa style interviews. I think you are on the right path honestly. With an IQ of 138 learning dsa should be a cake walk. Like I always say the greatest cheat code in life is a high IQ. Also it's absolutely okay to learn to code for money. Don't allow anyone blackmail you.

Thanks for this response. I'll continue on my path. I did few hours of an 8 hour python course last night and it seemed easy, almost like I was reading JavaScript but with few modifications to the syntax, and easier to grasp. Seems at the core all languages share the same concepts.

I downloaded a course on Data structures and Algorithms and I also got two books on it. I'll practice and improve my skills as I learn React and it's frameworks. I'll also learn Python simultaneously as well, since it's just similar to JavaScript.

I spend 14 hrs a day coding. I've practically deleted every distraction from my life. Women, clubbing, useless friends, video games, movies etc. I'm taking this very seriously and I know I'll succeed. Tech is the holy grail and I'm a fool for not realizing this earlier.

You see why you can never make it in life? Where in my post did I insult your already miserable life? You should have finished school at least to learn to read and understand.

All the same, visit Discord and Reddit to ask them there. Faggót!!

Please set aside the python for now. Laser focus on one thing and get good at it.

For now think less about the destination and enjoy the journey. You’re on the right track bro.
And the amount of knowledge you’ve gathered over a short period shows you’re a fast learner.
But I think typescript is too far down your list, if you’re doing react then you should already know typescript cause it’s gradually replacing JavaScript in production react codes.

You have over 500 courses?

You should follow a structured course.
Not watching different different tutorials

So far I think you're learning everything at once and may end up overwhelmed without learning anything.

It's not always about how many hours you spend sitting one place.

It's about what u actually understand.

Under a month youve dived into REACT.

If one questions you now and ask u if you're sure uv really understood HTML,Css and JavaScript b4 flying to REACT

U may end up calling the person a fool.

As per youy question.

U won't regret learning programming.

At first getting a job will be difficult due to saturation in the field.

Once uv gotten your first job and gained professional experience as a developer

The sky will be your limit.

It's true.

Good luck in your endeavors.

The 500+ courses includes project based tutorials and lectures. I have unlimited WiFi access so instead of downloading movies and porn, I downloaded programming courses and project videos, but organized them in a way that I won't get overwhelmed. I practically have the entire YouTube Programming section on my Hard drive. With books, the website (gen.lib.rus.ec) gives me access to any book I want so that helps. Also used The Odin Project as a guide.

I follow structured courses. Just that I use multiple structured courses for learning a language. It helps reinforce the knowledge and better my understanding. For instance, when I was learning JavaScript, I had like 4 different courses. And I finished them all. Then I started building projects.

I'm a fast learner and very disciplined. I have learned CSS enough that I cloned multiple websites and also took on complex challenges on dribble. I mastered flexbox and CSS Grid so that sped up my learning.

With JavaScript, I learned the ES6 syntax as well as all the necessary concepts: Data types, Variables, Functions, Loops, high order array methods like( maps, filters, sort and reduce), learned Asynchronous JavaScript along with the data fetching methods (callbacks, promises, async await), learned Object oriented JavaScript which I enjoy a lot as it's more complex that the other concepts. I learned about scoping, closures, immutability, DOM Manipulation, event handlers etc.

I learned the above before venturing into react. Currently in React, I've learned about state, hooks, lists and keys, and functional components.

On the first of September I didn't even know what Visual studio code was, or what JavaScript was, but I'm happy I have attained all this knowledge in a space of 50 days. I can only get better.

The reason Typescript is down my list is because I wanted to be proficient at Javascript languages and libraries, before learning an alternative to JavaScript like Typescript.

tensazangetsu20, this Nigerian YouTuber Bukola learned Python, DSA, and became a software engineer at Google in just 6 months after graduating with a degree in Political science. It's all about hard work and discipline. People just like making excuses for themselves.

Yeah but she's an American citizen. I know that hardwork matters but the environment you are in and the passport you carry influences so much for your life. That's why a lot of people are trying to escape Africa. I myself have vowed severally to never have a Nigerian child. It can take her Nigerian counterparts years to achieve a tenth of what she has achieved.

I agree with everything you've said. Still I hold her as an inspiration as well as a counter to the notion that DSA is difficult to learn and a career as a software engineer would require years of learning to achieve. If she achevied all this in 6 months, I can too. I believe I'm smarter than her. I have tackled subjects like Pharmacology, Physiology, Anatomy, Engineering Mathematics, Thermodynamics etc, while she just did her history and cultural studies.

For me, everything depends on how you use your time. What she achieved might be ten times more difficult for someone living in Nigeria to achieve, but that shouldn't be a limitation. Putting in the hard work and being disciplined will certainly make things easier for someone in Nigeria, than being lazy and entertaining useless distractions.

Your background in medicine is gonna be a plus for you.

Honestly, I don't think DSA will be any where more complex than biochemistry, pharmacology, or any of those complex engineering stuffs.

You and the likes of sleekcode are a testimony that Nairaland has some really smart and hardworking folks.

Continue bro, you'll soon get to the promise land

I like that you did research your self, shows that you're serious. but to be honest all you wrote up there would take at least 2years to cover the fundamentals, It's also a road map to confusion grin

Search for fullstack road map on w3shool & follow the language or path that suit you all the best!

This is very correct. Environment matters a lot. I have been silencing the idea of japa but I think from what I am seeing lately I need to re-think.
Imagine our counterparts that learn Frontend, Data-science and the others are being paid to learn in the US, Canada and what have you, that alone will give them ginger to learn more unlike here in Nigeria, you go suffer buy laptop, pray for data money, sometimes no food and different obstacles like that. Omo I go japa make I finish with good grade from school sha while still honing my skills.

Japa isn't for yourself it's for your future generations. Honestly the window to migrate to the west is closing and Africa is doomed. If one doesn't make the move within the next 10 years it will be almost impossible to make the move again
