Liz Truss resigned as the British Prime Minister on Thursday after spending only 45 days in office.

She made the announcement 24 hours after saying she was a fighter and not a quitter in her response to a question from the opposition Labour Party leader, Keir Starmer.

Truss’ difficult moments came in her last final 24 hours with her economic programme dividing the Conservative Party she headed for just six weeks.

As the world still battles to recover from Truss’ shocking resignation, this piece delves briefly into five things that contributed to her fate:

1) Liz Truss’ first few days as the UK PM started with the introduction of a costly blueprint to manage the energy household bills, in response to escalating prices due to the Russia-Ukraine war. The plan was eclipsed for 10 days following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

2) The ex-minister of finance, Kwasi Kwarteng, declared a “mini-budget” in September, which gave a comprehensive price of the energy scheme for $67 billion in six months, with the unveiling done but lacking measures to raise funds.

3) Kwarteng also announced massive borrowing and new tax cuts including for top earners in the UK, without tangible measures leading to the Pound falling and the political exasperation the UK cabinet experienced. Two days later, Kwarteng vowed, “more to come on tax cuts.”

4) After criticism and tumult, Liz Truss was forced to take a humiliating U-turn on her proposed cut in the top rate of income tax following speedy late-night talks. Kwasi Kwarteng was later sacked after 36 days in office.

5) The crisis continued for erstwhile PM, as her Home Minister Suella Braverman resigned following a squabble with Truss and chancellor, Jeremy Hunt over immigration, saying that she had “serious concerns” about the government.

The Lord has brought Deserving Pain to Britain, the British destroyed lives by bringing Nigeria together.

God is not asleep, Britain woes has just begun for bringing animals and humans together for selfish reasons.

We all knew she wasn’t going to last, the only thing saving the UK is their currency which is losing value. The UK will split pretty soon (Scotland and Northern Ireland to exit).
Boris Johnson created the problem with his brexit policy, they could have stayed in the EU.
All Liz truss should have done was to capitulate and beg Russia and China on her knees, so as to help them economically but nope the western arrogance won’t let them.

To some....it's a sincere and genuine course by Liz Truss to resign from office...She did so honourably because she realised she won't be able to fulfill her campaign promises.

She was just 6 weeks old in office.

I have read lots of comments praising her move and many affirmed that this "rare" trait is not found among Nigeria's politicians...they will rather die in governance than call it quit. grin cheesy grin

Personally, I have problem with Liz Truss...simply because of the timing of her actions. I believe 6 weeks is just too little to chicken out..

She applied for this job, not because it is an easy one...in fact, Borris Johnson was somehow forced to quit ....which shows how demanding the position is.

She campaigned vigorously, winning the hearts of voters against other contestants..just to bow out in 6weeks

What of tax payers money that have been expended in conducting the elections...all down the drain in the face of economic hardship...just in 6weeks

I am amazed she doesn't know how demanding and complex that position will be and she wasn't prepared that the system may not allow her do what she intends doing untill she championed reforms that will allow her.

Sincerely, she is a leader I don't ever wish to have!

They should leave her alone. They'd suffer their decisions. They're not patient with her to at least prove her mettle. This isn't about the PM, the reality is dawning on the entire world. There are econimic imbalances brought about by the war on Ukraine. Yesterday, dollar appreciated against the GBP, a few hrs after Lizz resigned. Was it the PM who caused it? Was it the mini budget plans the sacked finance minister proposed that caused it? No! They had seen it coming. There's nothing wrong with the mini bughet proposal.

Even if Borris Johnson should come back, he'd face far more challenge. He shouldn't even try it because things are going to be worse in coming days. Pounds would be weakened further. Had the UK remained in Europe, the effect wouldn't have been so much felt economically as they're feeling it today.

I wish Nigeria had prepared long for this too. We'd have taken advantage of the oil boom to help boost our economy. We are at an advantage but the government and their policies have failed. The entire world should be prepared for more challenge. But things would normalise later.

She went too far with alot of things. One of it is the tax cut for some and tax increase for others. One of the others is racism about immigrants in the UK.

If you know you can't deliver on your mandate, Resign! But in a country I know, they will either die there or hold on to power till everything collapse under their watch and begin to blame someone else.....

You constructed 1km of road, you wont allow us to rest, yet our currency is on a steady decline.

Thumbs up Liz Truss
