I think from the time the Court ordered them back ....they need to be paid from that time. If you're in a Union... you pay Union Dues. One purpose of Union Dues.... accumulated over yearssss .... is to compensate workers in times of strike. The lecturers should've been asking the Union for compensation. The Union should've been paying them during the course of the strike. If they need the FG to pay... they will have to go to court. Now that they are back... it is arrogant for them to be saying they will be there but not performing. Students need to take the fight to them .... perform your duty or be stoned.... see how quick they will come to their senses. But too many students hold these lecturers as demi gods ... and we wonder why they can be sooo arrogant. Stone them.

In everything, let's go back to the root of the problem.

What is the base cause of this strike? Unfulfilled necessities of over a decade.

There you have it. Of course the FG can decide to withhold their salaries. Nothing stops them from doing that; not even a court order.

We know who'd suffer the consequences of disgruntled employees.
Who?

The ASUU President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke had in a recent interview noted that the lecturers had called off their action and returned to work but were challenged by the nonpayment of their eight months salaries which had posed a huge challenge for the lecturers to meet their daily needs and be able to discharge their responsibilities to the returning university students.

Mr. Odiir said the returning lecturers might not give their best because of the obvious challenge of lack of funds, “and that means that the universities would be reopened but teaching and learning might not take place because the lecturers are not motivated.

“So we are appealing to the Federal Government to fulfill its part of the bargain to effect the payment of the salaries of the returning lecturers to enable them fully resume work.

“There is no doubt that the lecturers would obey the court ruling and resume classes but they would certainly not be able to engage in lecturing if they don’t start getting their eight months salaries.

“That is why the Federal Government should pay them without further delay in the spirit of the agreement brokered by the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

“We also appeal to the Speaker to do a follow up to the good work he initiated to have the lecturers call off the action by impressing on all the relevant authorities to have the salaries paid so that our public universities can roar back to life.

Government should treat them the way they used to treat students.

What was stopping them from doing so for the past 8 months?

They are many private universities in Nigeria and abroad that will gladly absorb them, in the same our medical and technology personnel have been drained away from the country. And who is suffering from this? We Nigerians.

LIES.
Private Universities in Nigeria pay their Lectures peanuts. While foreign Universities can not appoint quack Lectures like ASUU members. Na manage we dey manage them for Nigeria.

That's why they keep producing half baked Graduates. Besides, them force them to work for FG? Let them resign and relocate abroad if e easy. grin

When you fail to keep an agreement and the opponent down tools because of that, you don't refuse to pay because if there were no breach on your part the strike wouldn't have happened.

Yes oO...ASUU should have known better, even a year old toddler is very much aware Buhari doesn't give a damn about Education, it was glaring and obvious in his body language and that which was allocated to the Educational sector as captured in his yearly budgets...

But No...!! ASUU decided to dare Buhari, A whole Buhari ruling Nigeria with a NEPA bill certificate, A whole Buhari that once supported the agenda that education is a haram, No no no, you dare not touch the Tigers tail and go scout free, for months, FG pretended like ASUU was'nt in existence, One month salary turned into 2, 3 and counting but ASUU blatantly told the media their lecturers has other businesses and can sustain themselves for the next 5years that they are unshakable and unbothered even if the Universities would be shut down for 2years...

[i] The students were suffering and paying dearly with their GP's due to an accelerated and congested academic calendar with no time for rest in a session, most parents were gnashing their teeths because bills were piling up within an accumulated short time frame, most students lost their lives, most dropped out, businesses within school environment was totally shut down, market women exhausted and ate up their capital due to low demands signalling a sad end in there businesses, most students were still battling with their landlords for delayed payments for the rent owed in 2020/2021 and ASUU added 2022...!! wink [i]

But Hey, we are ASUU, we did not work for 7months, we want our full payments before we can call off the strike after all agreement has been met, it became another tussle entirely, 6months became 8months, and the FG registered CONUA, ASUU was about to become irrelevant and inconsequential due to the birth of a new child. Automatically, their tune changed and their ego was shattered, it dawned on them they have to obey the court order and called off the strike.

A strike of 8months ended up with absolutely nothing been achieved, UTAS which was top of their food chain was'nt implemented, Agreement of 2009 were fulfilled by mere words as usual, they only achieved an audio increment of salary which they smiled and became comfortable like a child who was about to receive a caprison from his mother, meaning all along, ASUU has only one mission in sight, they were only interested in there respective pockets and stomach infrastructural development.

The University is not your father's property, neither is it your generational inheritance, if you are not comfortable with the system after channelling your grievances, why not honourably resign or wait for a reputable government to assume power, afterall, most professors and lecturers were returning officers used to rig Buhari back to power in 2019 general elections, instead of subjecting the masses to a different language of self inflicted hardship in the name of fighting for the welfare of the students, can the same showboating of extreme arrogance be replicated in a private sector?? Now they want to eat their cake and have it.

ASUU should have known better, it's a case of "You won't know the effects until it starts affecting you"

You've said it all

Do you understand that

And we will start taking you seriously when lecturers start diversifying into politics to improve the educational sector.

We shouldn't be asking this question.
The senators and representatives enjoy a lot of frivolous money and they have never been owed for a day.
Meanwhile, their usefulness is nothing. They are not really needed.
Priority should be on the lecturers who are ten times more useful.
this is the nonsense they sell to mentally docile brains in Nigeria and they fall for it.

If Lecturers want the salaries if politicians they should resign from their lecturing job and join politics.

Lecturers are not the only civil servants in Nigeria. They can't be rewarded for frustrating our children and students.

Please my son don't let people take advantage of your gullibility.

This is shallow thinking, sir. Very shallow.
Nigeria is a country working at 30% capacity. Nothing is working. A serious country will prioritize education because politicians.
Our politicians are almost useless. They only take actions when they are personally affected.
They get huge salaries and big amounts of money . They even get nonsense called hardship money. They get huge amount of money for snacks and pocket money.
Meanwhile, Nigeria needs that money.
Ask yourself, if the government gives lecturers all they are asking for, why would they strike?

Ekweremadu that has been in the UK since how many months now is receiving salaries.

20 years after his tenure as Lagos state governor, Tinubu has never missed his allowances.

So why can't the government pay lecturers after failing to meet their part of the deal? If workers decide to accept this no work, no pay policy, government will surely weaponise poverty across board. They're already torturing the common man, including those who called themselves APC u.rchins. Many of them can no longer afford Chicken Republic rice yet rooting for politicians with private jets and oil wells grin

The citizens are the problems of this country. The federal government right now has budgeted Obasanjo and Jonathan's allowances for 2023 yet na lecturers be una problem. Lazy yoots! This suffering must surely go round but one thing is sure, it will never touch those in government - the same people you all support.

If you envy politicians so much, diversify into politics and see how easy it is.

(Note..I agree with you , but I want to draw your attention to some things)

1.ASUU goes on strike repeatedly because universites...need money.

2.No Nigerian university is in the top 100, or even top 500 global universities in the world...plus we cannot do advanced research in many things...for idnsutry, healthcare, etc...because...poor funding.

3.ASUU members want to work with high quality equipment, labs, libraries, lecture halls, and want better welfare for themselves, students and other staff.

4.Government rightly tells ASUU every time that the money is not sufficent.

5.So how do we stop ASUU from going on strike....raise fees. To levels like 1 million naira and above.

You don't like? But you just basically said that ASUU is wrong to go on strike.

Either fees go up, or in ten years private universites will surpass public universites. Guess who suffers more...the poor.
