•Meet today on Jonathan’s six-year single term proposal
By Rotimi Akinwumi Correspondent, Abuja

Embarrassed by the exchange of insults ongoing between two former Presidents, Ibrahim Babangida and Olusegun Obasanjo, some state governors have waded into the imbroglio, by mounting pressures on President Goodluck Jonathan to call the two elder statesmen to order.

The media was awash last week with exchanges of insulting words between the duo, an occurrence most Nigerians see, not only as demeaning of the office they had both occupied in the past, but also constituting nuisance to the international image of the country.

It is not clear if the matter will be officially discussed at the Governor’s Forum meeting to be held today.

Sunday Independent, however, gathered that the meeting scheduled to hold at the River State Governor’s Lodge, Asokoro in Abuja is set to discuss the controversial issue of the six-year single term proposal by Jonathan.

It was gathered as well that the state executives would also take a look at the proposal by the president to seek constitutional amendment to labour laws as to make it easier for states to negotiate minimum wage in their respective states, unlike the blanket negotiation being done by the Federal Government on behalf of the states.

A competent source disclosed to Sunday Independent that there is the likelihood of the Forum resolving not to back the six-year single term proposal by the president as members have, at individual levels, shown resentment to the proposal while making personal comments about the new proposal made by the president.

It will be recalled that President Goodluck Jonathan came under heavy criticism by members of opposition, some members of his own party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as well as some opinion leaders when the news broke that he was planning to forward a bill to the National Assembly, seeking to reverse the four-year renewable term for executive office holder to a single term of six years, non-renewable.

The president was accused of seeking a back door means of extending his current term, while others who believed his excuse that he was altruistic about his intention said the timing of the proposal was wrong.

Under fire, President Jonathan at the PDP National Executive Committee (NEC) explained that the proposal was not original to him, but a report adopted by an inter-party committee he headed while he was the Vice-President in 2008.

It was generally believed that the idea has died with the level of condemnation that trailed it, but the presidential spokesman, Reuben Abati, last week told Nigerians that the plan was still alive and that the bill would be sent to the National Assembly when members returned from their holidays.

However, the proposal by the president to give powers to states to negotiate salaries for their workers in accordance with the financial strength of the states is expected to receive favourable consideration from the state governors’ meeting.

The issue of minimum wage payment in the country has become a thorny issue in the country as most governors have complained that the N18,000 minimum wage agreement entered into by the Federal Government with workers in the country cannot be implemented by most of the states because of their lean resources.

The state governors argued that the nation’s revenue allocation formula must be changed to favour the states before they might be able to pay the new minimum wage.

It wouldn't be necessary to call IBB to order; he knows when to sit and when to stand. He just doesn't do things just for the fun of it. Trust me, there is a reason why he made a statement regarding OBJ's failure on his 70th birthday.
Just chill and see what happens.

It is only IBB & his avid supporters that cannot see that senility & fear of dying in irrelevance is catching up with IBB.

His frantic pronouncements on national issues leading to this so-called 70th birthday is a good pointer to that.

The ghosts of Abiola, Vatsa, Dele Giwa, etc are bearing down on the old man in the deepest corners of his mansion.

Thats a very strange thing to say about a shameless old man who is locked in a verbal duel where phrases like "fool at 70" are used freely. Strange indeed.
As for IBB's "reason," it can only be as stup!d as his actions.

Since when has it been a crime for two old men, grandfathers, looters to make a fool of themselves?, they have the right to abuse one another and leak each others secrets it is a universal human right. GEJ please concentrate on giving us electricity and bringing down the price of cement and leave those thieves alone unless you want to investigate them for corruption.

Does someone even have to tell GEJ to do the right thing before he does it?
BTW I think it's about time he fires his advisors/cabinets.

OBJ and IBB are the greatest fools that ever dis-grased this nation. Shames OBJ will continue to drag the Yoruba ppl this way- that way. May none of is offspring never get important roles in politics again. Agbaya arugbo.

You seem to have forgotten how much you defended IBB in the recent elections. He is only showing how foolish he is to young and old, also he's actions display the abject daftness of those like you who canvassed that he should be president. In the meantime, his behaviour is no better than the average boko haram operative.

How can you ask a man that continues to wet his pant whenever he comes across IBB (in person or via phone) to call IBB to order?
How can you expect a mere deer to call a LION to order in a jungle?
