Hello, fellow nairalanders. It's me again. This time, I'm not informing you on diseases but on health tips.
You're probably wondering what ESL means. If you are, no worries. It will be revealed shortly.

Now, although I'm talking about your physical health, plying these tips can boost your emotional health as well because, as research shows, the mind and the body are incredibly connected to each other (did you know that a stroke patient who has lost the ability to communicate with his left hand can simply place his right hand in front of a mirror and, moving it hither-and-thither while looking into the mirror, cause his brain to restore connections to his left hand?—if you don't understand what I said, we can talk more on the comment section)

So, ESL stands for EAT, SLEEP, EXERCISE.

Without further ado, let's dive in!


1) EAT:
Who commanded us to eat 3 times a day anyway? It seems to have sprung up during the 18th century as a result of an economic boom. But for several centuries before that, many nations have been content eating just twice daily.

Anyway, while there is nothing wrong with eating three times a day, overeating can cause insulin insensitivity and resistance, paving the way to type 2 diabetes mellitus*—if interested in knowing, ask me how in the comment section.
Some people are trying to combat this by eating twice a day, (intermittent fasting) others by fasting once a week, and still others by fasting twice a week

We know the six classes of food to be carbohydrates, proteins, fats & oil, vitamins, minerals, water. Now, here are the six classes of healthy food:

Whole-grain carbohydrates
Lean protein
Low-fat dairy
Fruits
Vegetables
Water

Now, those with peptic ulcers will of course want to adjust how they eat. One suggestion is to eat smaller portions of food more often.
Those seeking to watch their weight can/should drink about 50cl water before eating, and replace half the portion of their food with fruits/vegetables.

Long story short, food is very important. And instead of counting calories, either (1) stop when you're satisfied, or (2) if you're seeking to lose weight, replace half your portion of food with fruits/vegetables.


(2) SLEEP:

Sleep is very important. For example, it is during sleep that memories are consolidated, and concentration is improved afterwards. Thus, depriving yourself of sleep sabotages your efforts to learn.
There are other benefits of sleep. For example, our immune system needs 7 hours of sleep if it must function properly.
Losing sleep can also contribute to type 2 diabetes mellitus* as well.


(3) EXERCISE:

This is for everyone, not just for those looking for big muscles.
Generally, if you live an active lifestyle, you might be getting enough exercise—depending on how active your lifestyle is. But if you live a sedentary lifestyle, you need exercise to keep fit.
Gone should be the days when being fat and overweight is highly valued, since research showing the dangerous effects that excess weight has on our organ systems.

Anywhere from 15 - 30 minutes of moderately-to-extremely intense exercise twice a week to everyday will be needed, depending on how active your lifestyle already is.

Plus, exercise is a great way to increase insulin sensitivity, decrease insulin resistance, and even as-good-as reverse type 2 diabetes.
