The Himba are a tribe living in North West of Namibia where they’ve been for over 900 years. The women engage in milking their cows, taking care of the children and the men go hunting. Their wealth is determined by the number of cattle they have.

The amazing thing about the Himba tribe is they do not bath. They cover themselves with otjize,a mixture of butter fat and ochre,to protect themselves from the sun which gives them their red color. Even though they don’t bath, they always smell nice ,kind of courtesy to their women.

Their virtue is “Give honor to whom it’s due” so when a visitor comes knocking, man approves by giving him the “Okujepisa Omukazendu treatment”. This means his wife is given to his guest while the husband sleeps in another room. if there isn’t any, the man sleeps outside.

This tradition has its benefits in the community: it reduces jealousy and fosters relationships.The woman has little or no opinion in the decision making. Submission to her husband is first. She has an option of refusing to sleep with him but must sleep in the same room as guest.

She is also entitled to give her friends to her husband when they visit but this rarely happens.
