AcuraZDX: Following the unwarranted outburst of Chukwuma Soludo, the former CBN governor whom after wasting billions to mint 50kobo and 1Naira notes that are worth next to nothing currently, I bring you a throwback article regarding the poverty rate under Peter Obi's administration as Anambra state governor.
In November 10, 2010, the National Co-ordinator of National Poverty Eradication Programme (NAPEP), Dr. Magnus Kpako, rated Anambra state high as the state with the lowest poverty rate across the Nation.
Dr. Kpakol made this comments while speaking with Daily Champion Newspaper.
Peter Obi's Response After The Declaration
GOVERNOR Peter Obi of Anambra State commended the National Poverty Eradication Programme (NAPEP), saying the agency has done much in fighting poverty in the country, especially in his state.
He also appealed to the agency to continue to assist the poor, insisting that a society, which does not care for the poor, will not be able to protect the rich.
According to Obi, the work of NAPEP is critical to nation-building, hence should not be politicised for maximum benefit of the country.
Obi, who briefed journalists yesterday after he came back from Abuja, said he visited the agency to solicit its assistance for the state’s effort to tackle poverty and “to express gratitude for what NAPEP is doing in the country”.
He disclosed that the state has documented poverty rate at the council level with the aim of identifying the poorest councils for possible intervention.
The governor also disclosed that the state had put measures on ground to assist the poor and that everything had been concluded for the take-off of a faith-based micro credit scheme in Anambra.
In his response, Senior Special Assistant to the President and National Coordinator, NAPEP, Magnus Kpakol, assured of the agency’s willingness to assist Anambra State to strengthen its efforts against poverty.
Kpakol expressed satisfaction with Obi’s performance in Anambra State, saying “he is the type of governor anybody would want to work with because of his dedication and concern for the people”.
He added: “We are prepared to support you in the excellent work you are doing in Anambra State. You understand what development is and you are busy investing in your people. It is also worthy to note that you are the first governor to visit us this year and I will like to tell you that you have our commitments. We shall support your poverty alleviation programmes and economic development”. https://guardian.ng/news/nigeria/national/obi-commends-napep-on-poverty-eradication-initiatives/
Anambra State Was Also Recorded As The State With The Lowest Unemployment Rate Under Peter Obi
The minister of National Planning and Vice Chairman of the National Planning Commission, Dr. Shamsudeen Usman, yesterday said in Awka that Anambra was one of the few states in the country with the lowest level of unemployment. He attributed the situation to the entrepreneurial capability of the people of the state.
Speaking during the flag –off of the Gross Domestic Product, GDP, computation in Nigeria, for the South East geo-political zone, the minister said with about 10% unemployment rate, Anambra was one of the least among the 36 states in the country.
According to him, “the reason is not far–fetched because the people of the state are very resourceful, adding that rather than continue to seek employment, they are mainly employers of labour”.
The three major cities in the state which are Onitsha, Awka and Nnewi have great potentials for economic transformation of the country. While Onitsha is well known for commerce, Awka and Nnewi are famous for black smiting and industrial development respectively.”
The minister described Anambra State Integrated Development Strategy, ANIDS, policy as similar to the federal government’s Transformation Agenda and explained that he would study the operation of ANIDS because it had helped to fast track the development of the state.
He said: “We don’t have objective statistics in this country because we don’t have objective data for measuring economic activities. What often happens is that a governor with goodwill in the media usually gets favourable assessment as a great performer, which is wrong. It is not clear how the media arrive at such assessment since there can only be an accurate statistics if there is available accurate data.”
The Minister explained that the choice of Awka for the flag off of the GDP computation project for the South East was in recognition of the leadership qualities of Governor Peter Obi who he noted had demonstrated commitment to sound economic management, accountability and transparency.
