The Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, says the Federal Government will do away with petroleum subsidy by June 2023.

Ahmed said this on Tuesday in Abuja during a press conference to mark the end of the 28th National Economic Summit.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that fuel subsidy gulped N2.565tn between January and August 2022.

Also, in the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework, the Federal Government proposed to spend N3.3tn on fuel subsidy between January and June 2023.

According to Ahmed, removal of fuel subsidy is part of the FG’s medium-term plan in the budget.

She, however, said that the challenge was how to go about removing the subsidy.

“First, we have to engage. We have already engaged with the states and the public before it was approved as part of the medium-term plan.

“We have to do it by systematically informing the citizens about the size and the quantum of the fuel subsidy.

According to the minister, the fuel subsidy, in addition to budget deficit, is putting enormous pressure on the “fiscals”.

“It is not money that we have; it is money that we have to borrow to maintain the fuel subsidy.

“Some countries introduced subsidy during the COVID-19, and because of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, but they are using their money to fund such subsidy.

“In our case, we are borrowing to pay the subsidy; that is double jeopardy. It is something that has to stop

“We are glad that majority of people in decision-making positions, including the political parties, have agreed that subsidy is not sustainable.

”The plan is, by June 2023, we must have completely exited subsidy, and it has to be a gradual process,” she said.

Subsidy gulps N150 billion every month.” N150 billion is still less than the N200 billion monthly transport bonus bill the regime will pay to 400 million Nigerians. In other words, Nigeria will spend more money on transport bonus to an amorphous, unidentifiable, and probably cooked-up 40 million poor Nigerians than the subsidies it says it pays on petroleum subsidies, which it says are too expensive to be sustainable. That makes absolutely no sense.

The last time the Buhari regime increased fuel prices last year, it said it had completely done away with fuel subsidies and had left the price of petrol to the vagaries of demand and supply. Now, the regime’s honchos say again that the subsidy they said they’d completely removed, for which there was no allocation in the 2021 budget, must be removed again! ....."
https://gazettengr.com/farooq-kperogi-same-old-cruel-lies-to-justify-fuel-price-hike/

-Same subsidy the Buhari claimed is fraud. Meaning they have been perpetuating the same fraud for the past 7 years? Why shifting the responsibility of removal to the next government?

-How did the government determined the amount of petroleum products consumed daily in this nation since the NNPC & Dept of Petroleum Resources don't have accurate data on daily fuel consumption? Hence estimated the staggering amounts paid on subsidy?

-Why are Nigerian refineries still functioning @ sub-optimal capacity hence zero crude oil refining with the bogus subsidiy not making NNPC to remit returns to the federation accounts?

-Where is now the overhyped integrity associated with this unfaithful government?

What a government of lies and propaganda. Tueh!

Subsidy is a scam

A scam that has enriched a few greedy people

But the reason why Nigerians are against its removal is lack of trust for the government

Going by their antecedence, can they be trusted enough to use the proceeds from Subsidy to better the lives of the ordinary man

Can u trust the APC government

How can you "re-remove" something you have removed before

Buhari should not stop fuel subsidy next year. This is going to be unfair on the incoming government. Why didn't he remove it since?

This is similar to what some sate governors do when they don't win reelection. They employ new workers that will cause problems for the governor-elect.

About time the subsidy madness, seen since 1973, ended.

The sad thing is that the more we spend on subsides, the more we get into debt, and the more we don't have good refineries.

Yes, if we removed subsidy by September 2022, we would have been buying fuel at N500, but the concept of refining fuel at home would have been profitable.

I conclude with this quote on why subsides are bad...

Why are oil subsidies bad economics?

Every year, the Nigerian government runs huge budget deficits that could have been avoided if money budgeted for oil subsidies was allocated to other critical projects.

Subsidies should be used to spur investment in activities that raise the productive capacities of an economy (such as education, health, entrepreneurship, and infrastructure). They should be targeted at strategic sectors of the economy. They should not be used to finance non-durable consumption items like petrol.

Oil subsidies are inequitable, as they transfer the national wealth to those who own several cars and add little or no value to the national economy.

In lieu of subsidies, the government should invest massively in public transportation and boost the transport allowances of public-sector workers.

Removing fuel subsidies would also be good for the environment and safety on Nigerian roads. When motorists pay the full economic price for petrol, they will drive less, emit less pollution and reduce the incidence of road accidents.

There should be a clear communication to Nigerians that the removal of fuel subsidies favours the poor, and eliminates one of the several perks that the Nigerian elites undeservedly enjoy

N.B I am not here to argue with anyone. I do not support the APC or PDP or LP, and infact wish that APC, PDP, LP, NNPP all get voted out next year. I do not work for the government in any capacity, or for the petroleum industry. I post based on 11 years of reading and thinking about subsides, and over those eleven years, my eyes have been opened to how bad they are.

If you don't agree with me, that's your cup of coffee. Enjoy it.

I will not be answering any quotes. Read the source. For me , it is either we pay the market price of petrol at the pump, or we pay for it by debts and budget deficits.

Good morning.

Useless people. After 8 years of creating no solution and defining a direction, you take us back to 2015 but now in a very worse state.

May APC never happen to Nigeria again.

It's because of massive corruption, subsidy is not suppose to be upto that amount..

Which country consumes more fuel in times scarcity, in times of recession, in times of VIN increase at the ports, in times of unemployment, world poverty capital etc.... Only Nigeria.

And Buhari is leaving on May 29th.
Re: Zainab Ahmed: Fuel Subsidy To End In 2023 by Nobody: 6:07am On Nov 16, 2022
Here is why subsidy should end.

IN 2010 and 11, fuel was N65, and subsidy spending went up from 25% to 60% of oil revenue in one year.

2012, subsidy was removed by GEJ partially..PRICES WENT up from N65 to N97 and then to N87..and spending fell..from 37/2%-26%

In 2015, Buhari removed subsidy partially....prices went up from N87 to N145...and spending fell.

By 2019, subsidy spending was up to 53% of the oil revenue...so prices went up to N167, and subsidy spending fell again

Now it is going up and it keeps going up (this year, we have spent more than we spent in 2021 alone.

It costs a lot of money to sell fuel at a price below the production cost....and then while the production cost risies, we have to pay rising subsides.

Plus, no one is going to invest in a refinery here, unless you are dangote, and sell fuel at a loss . And the fact is, the subsidy would be gone when Dangote comes on stream...because Dangote selling subsidsied fuel would mean selling at aloss...and even if government buys from him at full price, and subsidsies it...the subsidy cost will rise because Dangote cost is going to rise for him to stay competitive...and pay for upgrades, loans, etc.

See sense.

You condemned it before gaining power. Said it was a fraud...that it didn't even exist. Made countless "empty promises " of one working refinery per year.

You got in, found how easy it was to make the needed hard decision but cowered....then even made it worse.

All of a sudden you've become brave when you won't suffer any fallout....on your way out.
