The National Bureau of Statistics has disclosed that 133 million Nigerians are multi-dimensionally poor.

In its latest National Multidimensional Poverty Index report launched on Thursday, the NBS said that 63 per cent of Nigerians were poor due to a lack of access to health, education, living standards, employment and security.

The Multidimensional Poverty Index offers a multivariate form of poverty assessment, identifying deprivations across health, education, living standards, work and shocks.

The Statistician-General of the Federation and CEO of the NBS, Semiu Adeniran, said this was the first time the bureau would conduct a standard multidimensional poverty survey in Nigeria.

“The survey was implemented in 2021 to 2022 and it is the largest survey with a sample size of over 56,610 people in 109 senatorial districts in the 36 states of Nigeria,” he said.

Five poorest states
The NBS report further showed Sokoto, Bayelsa, Gombe, Jigawa and Plateau are the top poorest states in 2022.

Sokoto leads the poorest with 90.5 per cent of people in the state poor. It is followed by Bayelsa with 88.5 per cent poor people, Gombe with 86.2 per cent, Jigawa with 84.3 per cent, and Plateau with 84 percent.

The least poor states
The least poor states are Ondo with 27.2 per cent poor people, Lagos with 29.4 per cent, Abia 29.8 per cent, Edo with 31 per cent, and Anambra with 32.1 per cent.

The report said that 65 per cent of poor Nigerians (86 million) were in the North, while 35 per cent (nearly 47 million) were in the South.

The report noted, “Overall, 65 per cent of poor people – 86 million people – live in the North, while 35 per cent – nearly 47 million – live in the South. In general, a disparity between North and South is evident in both incidence and intensity of multidimensional poverty, with the North being poorer.

“However, the level and number of poor people needs to be addressed in all zones – each of which are home to between 11 and 20 million poor people except North West, which has 45 million poor people due to its larger population and higher level of poverty.”

It also noted that 72 per cent of people in rural areas were poor. It is the same for 42 per cent of people in urban areas.

You are wrong. Are you saying the North is poor because they are large? Anambra and Abia are among top 10most populated states in Nigeria. The report is about percentage of poor people in a state.

Some of them are stinkingly rich but majority are poor. Eg Dangote is stinkingly rich in Kano but majority of Kano people are poor. The money does not circulate, Economics call it Unequal distribution of income. The Armed forces and co you quoted are less than 500k people combined and the rich among them are less than 50k people out of the over 100 millions of the North population

The same Anambra and Imo that get next to nothing from the federal government are now shoulders above states that get all the federal allocation fund and federal projects.

Having lived in the north, my views on this have drastically changed! I used to parrot this line too. That they're mainly poor and that few are rich bla bla bla bla. But go to the north. Apart from the almajiris, most of them are reasonably and relatively "rich" when compared to southerners too. The farmers are always sure of making tons of profit at harvest because they have their Local Government "corporatives" sponsored by the government, that buys off literally all their goods for onward shipment to the South at fixed prices. This and the cost of transportation are the main reasons the prices of foodstuffs down South are far costlier when compared to the north.

Most times we see some "northern" cobblers and gatemen down south, we use that to measure the affluence of the North but most of those guys are from either Niger, Mali or Chad. They just claim to be northerners to blend in.
Are they mainly illiterates? Yes! Do they need more upgrade in terms of how they conduct things? Maybe Yes. But are they poor? I doubt it. They may look haggard and not disposed to the flamboyant display of wealth that is our cultural hallmark down South, but they have money. Even in the remote areas.

They have a very good thriving agriculture and trading culture. They trade easily with no restrictions with their kits and kins across borders from Chad, Niger and northern Cameroons, while the Nigerian Custom Service makes that almost impossible down South. They are seldom saddled with all the administrative bottlenecks that southerners face in accessing federal governments credits and financial largesse. Infact, the North is far better off than we choose to admit down south.

In kebbi there are places you get 3k per night hotel in jega, yauri, in Bk the cheapest hotel is 5k. With 200k you can flex that up to 3weeks

In enugu the cheapest I could get was 8k

So if you do the math you'll see.

This is the kind of news that should scare any reasonable Nigerian, assuming I agree with the exaggerated figure of Nigerians being 200million, having 133 milloon poor Nigerians is very very very scary.
No reasonable government official should read this news and go to bed with his/her eyes closed.
It means out of every 10 Nigerian,6 are very poor, probably 3 can just afford to eat 1 or 2 meals daily and less than 0.0001% of the population are comfortable.

Nope, Ondo is already better than the rest going by the report including Lagos. People easily think Lagos is better off than the rest.

Those saying the population in the East is small are ignorant. The north is full of vast empty lands. If you travel from Abuja to up north, you will just be seeing empty lands. The population scheme is not correct.

Even though there’s a higher number of poor as a percentage of their population in the north….and i mean muslim core north, you’re right that they get a higher level of benefits from the Nigerian state. This is why they like the unitary system of government as presently practised…as well as big government! Building on this point, we can also boldly posit that the Nigerian polity will not be restructured any time soon! What’s helping the south is that they have a better educated populace which presents opportunities over and above that which the central gov’t can provide, hence there’s a better spread of wealth in the south than in the north where its states and population depend mainly on the Nigerian state to get by. What further worsens poverty levels in the north is their uncontrolled high birth rate.

Smug southerners, who love measuring dick with other ethnicities/regions at the slightest opportunity, will read these figures and feel all superior and funky! But with all their sense and education they’re yet to realise how the north uses these type of comparisons to attract more sympathy and funds (both local and foreign) to their region, entrepreneurs and general populace!
