Seeing the level of performance of African teams in this world cup is encouraging.
Senegal giving a good account of themselves against Netherlands , Tunisia holding Denmark and Morocco holding Croatia.

Something tells me if it were the supereagles against either Croatia and Denmark, we would have lost like we lost 4 years ago against Coratia.Against Netherlands, we would have been beaten by Nothing less than 4-0.

Our current crop of supereagles lacks a winning mentality, lacks leaders who can help them stand up to big teams. For example against Portugal, Portugal fielded their second team and player for player, the team they fielded shouldn't be much more better than our team who had Terem Moffi, Simon and Lookman who are banging goals day in day out in their clubs.Ndidi is one of the best midfielders in the premier leage and Bassey have been a revelation for Ajax.So how did a second string Portugal team rout us 4-0?

First and foremost, if you look at the supereagles these days, when playing a bigger team, they play without any confidence and keep making silly mistakes. Even if we score first like against Algeria, we simply can't hold on or score more.As soon as they scored against Algeria, we started defending instead of pressing more.If you remember last world cup, we could have killed Argentina but the likes of Iheanacho and Ighalo just gets jittery whenever near the post. When last did the supereagles win a match after conceding first?
The days of Okocha and Kanu, they were big game players that are unfazed by the team before them.Kanu can literarily turn a game on it's head single handedly.Okocha was Bolton's captain and can bring calm to the team. They don't start defending after a sinle goal.Hopefully the rise of Osimhen will fill this gap and give us a true big game player.

Our NFF is not fit for purpose, we have been performing woefully in even age grade competitions that we used to perform well. Our Local Clubsides are not even getting to the group stages of CAF competitions. How do you expect a local footballer who haven't player a CAF champions league group game to stand up to Neymar or Even Mahrez?
NFF needs to improve our local leagues, we need a footballing philosophy that all our acdemies and local clubs will follow. It would be ingrained in our footballers from under 7.We need standard academies that will be managed by well educated coaches who knows our footballing philosophy. The tikitaka of Spain, the wing play of France, the high intensity of the Germans, the impenetrable walls of the Italians. We need a philosophy that defines our national teams.

Then we need a good foreign coach familiar with African football like Herve Renard till our local coaches are well trained and can step up to take us to the next level.
