my parents are real life examples that school is the best, after university my dad went on to do his masters, taught for a while then PhD, now he's a boss. His salary is sky high all because he has a profession, my mum also is a top lawyer all this because of education. I don't ask money from them ever since i moved away and i work for my things. As a home student in the UK i'm entitled to thousands of pounds to support me while studying, the government rejected them all cos my parents were earning way too much but they don't know i'm my own soldier. I have been inspired and the way forward is to just keep collecting them certificates you can only get better, in short it is not a waste of time trust me

Thank u! i tot i was the only thinking like this! is it not funny that people who went to university are working under ppl who didnt go! so what is now the use of going to university then!   dont get me wrong i went to school o! not just that, infact i was the best graduating student in my set, but i remember i kept 'singing' it to those who cared to listen that i went to school just to fulfill all righteousness and please my parent! but i dnt know, there is this happiness i get in my heart when i hear that SO SO SO and SO person is a 'chairman/owner/ceo of group of companies!' and when i make little research about the person i discover he didn't go to university but i didnt know because he could express himself very well, that really motivated me and with the little i saved from the money my popsy used to give me and with the little contribution from my siblings i was able to buy a SMALL bus, register it and start my own transport company! from 1 bus to 2 buses, from 2 to 3 buses like that i kept expanding now i dnt even know how many i have!   though i hope to expand and buy BIG buses for my business, with the amount of money i make from this bizness alone MONTHLY i dnt think if i had pursued what i studied in university i wud have made that kinda money!

My fellow nairalander education is a necessity to the human race whether it is formal or/and informal,if u are doubting me go and watch the nollywood movie mama G goes to school u will understand,don't just watch it for entertainment but do it to educate urself,why it is of great important. Have u seen where someone around the age of 17 to 40 cann't fill his/her teller in de bank,they don't go close to de bank,court police station, etc.there are so many example i can state but because of time i will stop now,just go and watch de movie and come to tell us what u think again.

IMO,it depends on personal ideology,principles,vision etc.in my case,i wanted to become a doctor,fortunately,i wasn't given admission to study it.i opted for biochemistry,was really frustrated with it and eventually dropped out.i eventually went back to finish the course and got the certificate which till date lies in a file somewhere in my house.thats because i had already decided i wanted to become an entrepreneur.

rather than going for masters' as my parents wanted,i setup my company.its not been easy but i must confess that my experience in the university is still very useful.going to school isnt just about lectures,its more about the people you meet and experiences you go through.

IMO,its left for individual to decide if its necesary for him to go to university to achieve his life goals.

It is however a wrong notion to equate a degree to success in life and at thesame time its a wrong notion to label school a waste because not everybody has what it takes to be an entrepreneur

Really? Thats a new one. If thats your reason for going to school, then I am sorry for you.

op, Education is very necessary and it surprises me that  you(as a teacher) could not teach number system to school kids in a way that would make it interesting, if they get bored with such trivial subjects how would they understand the advanced systems.The value of education is not the immediate relevance but the broadening of the mind.Your job as teacher is to ensure that students are enlightened.

But not all education is necessary (for some). The craze for certificates which are just "letters of presumed competence" has reduced the value of education.Education is not all about books, colleges,degrees but involves continuous learning  as concerns ur area of interest.e,g if Robert kiyosaki had no "education"/ knowledge about being a real estate investor ,would he be successful, same thing goes for dangote and others

As some have already stated, school/education is a necessity but i would like to add that u shouldn't depend on it. It just gives us a general idea of what to expect in the real world and opens the door for employment opportunities.

After reading your views i guess the most important thing is to learn the basics of everything we can learn.not everything taught in schools are helpful to all students.so students should basically be taught ao to be the best in any field they choose not forcing 'anything down their throats'

EDUCATION IS NOT NECESSARY FOR AFRICANS WHICH IS THE REASON THE FG COULD'T MADE IT AVAILABLE TO ALL.

to me what i think education is is not what people are calling it, you can be an uneducated professor or let me put it in a better a way you may be a professor and yet not an educated fellow think about that, so education broadens your mind and help you to think in ways such that you make use of your skills and talents to make things happen for yourself not using it for for someone like you are a slave. working for people will never make you rich but the problem of most people is that how will they ever start without having a start up capital, butyou can start from level zero to level hero if you are determined.

that's where you get it wrong education is not confined only to the four walls of the class room he did not finish university but he developed himself and made himself relevant in the society, the things he knows was not given to him from heaven he learnt it, that's education.
