Nigerians on Saturday came down hard on Ondo State governor, Rotimi Akeredolu over his statement on the usage of the 13 percent oil derivation.

Rivers state governor, Nyesom Wike had few days ago revealed that the federal government has paid all outstanding 13 percent derivation funds due to the oil-producing states of the Niger Delta.

Akeredolu who confirmed the receipt of 13 per cent oil derivation, subsidy and SURE-P refunds from the Federation Account in the last two years (2021-2022), explained that the refunds received by the state were expended on capital projects and payment of accumulated salary arrears.

Akeredolu also disassociated himself from those alleged to have been stealing funds meant for the Local Governments from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC).

He said the refunds received from the Federal Government were judiciously expended on some key capital projects across the three senatorial districts of the state.

However, Akeredolu’s explanations did not go down well with many Nigerians, especially Ondo State residents who accused him of keeping quiet about the money until Wike’s revelation.

A Facebook user who commented on Akeredolu’s statement wrote “Governors are the problem of Nigeria. How can you receive Billions of naira and keep quiet but they will be the first to make noise whenever there’s shortfall of monies that’s due to them from the federation account. They are now busy concocting lies to tell their people on how they expended the money”.

Yemi Ogundeji wrote “Why is the information just coming out after Governor Wike disclosed it to the public? Is it not belated, a transparent govt should have left the governance knows about this development immediately.Again, with this humongous amount, why is d governor also still finds it difficult to clear the arrears of salary?”.

Omoseeni Olorunjuwon wrote “See watery defence. Rehabilitation and asphalt overlay of 32.6km Araromi-Alape road in ilaje? Very funny, asphalt overlay that was done up till Etikan and they stopped. If the road has been funded, it would have been completed now”.

Ifedayo Festus wrote “Why is it that majority of these governors are strongly opposed to local government autonomy if they are sure they don’t tamper with their allocation?”.

Omogbemi Omotola wrote “Honestly Mr Governor, you are not doing well at all”.
