May the good lord protect and keep you safe. May He remove illness from you. May you not need surgery that will cripple you. Amen.
Guys, you have no idea how rampant some sicknesses are until you enter the hospital.
You see that aneurysm ehn, it is as rampant as headache, these days. One doctor operated on 2 patients beside me charging them 4m per case. They survived. And, it was not in a private hospital.
Please, one advice, be careful with substance abuse and take good care of your mental health. I have lost 4 friends to this aneurysm in 3 years.
And if you must be ill, please, go to Kebbi or Zamfara. Have your procedure there. 50/50 is a good chance. 200k will not treat ingrown toenails on the Island. In all you do, please, stay safe. |

The pay is poor in Nigeria. Their Hazard allowance during covid time was 5k and it was not even paid regularly. That is the reason most of them work for a while here and save for a better life overseas where they are treated well. A qualified nurse in UK or America is a big girl/boy, let alone doctors. |

Lol ...You are kind of ignorant probably because you are not in the system. How much do you think all those big hospitals on lagos island charge for complex surgeries ?? A private facility in Owerri, one of the best in Nigeria had 3 open heart surgeries 2 weeks ago and each patient paid 10 million naira. Imagine if it was Lagos Island or Abuja .
While I agree that you don't make such all the time , but you do 1 of those cases at least once in a week . Neuro and Cardiothoracic cases actually cost a lot.
I remember seeing a thread on nairaland about a man whose wife entered one chance in Lagos. She landed in a private hospital on the island. The man claimed to spend almost 600k. When I saw the pictures of his injured wife , I doubted his story and felt the 600k was a lie judging from the injuries sustained. Not until I got a job on the island as a medical officer Omo , I weak .
There was this boy we managed for a febrile illness. He spent 4 to 5 days on admission and their bill was almost a million naira . Treating that child in Ibadan where I worked earlier would not cost more than 50k .
So , it is very very very possible for a surgeon ( especially orthopaedic/Neuro/ Cardiothoracic surgeons )to make more than 2million on a case .

ZACHIE: Be good at your craft and earn 2m per surgical procedure. And you can have 5 in a week. Doctors make a kill for a living. The 2 million is not for the surgeon in most cases. Only really complex surgeries can command 2 million in surgeons fees alone. The 2 million factors in cost of consumables, blood, sterizing equipment, theater space, anesthetic fees, cost of intro op medication, oxygen etc. Out of thrb2 million the surgeon's fee can be 200k or more 2 Likes |

An average salary for doctors in government hospitals is between 120 and 200k. Senior regs in FMCs and teaching hospitals is between 220 and 270k. Who do you think stay with patients and monitor their vitals ensuring they're kept alive? Who do you think will dress your wounds and prevent it from getting infected? All the doctors I know are well off and doing well. Private and public sector. Ask them how many hospitals they are working at before you conclude they are well off. Any doctor working at less that 2 hospitals will not make enough to take care of a family of 4 unless he's working at high brown hospitals and clinics like Shell, Mobil etc 1 Like |

However, I do think doctors earn decently in Nigeria whether private or public. Not really. Private pays better. Public is really low. In both cases most doctors even the Consultants will have a primary place of employment and at least 1 other clinic or hospital they also work at. They may also have their private centre in addition just to make ends meet 2 Likes |

Alexaonfleek: Not necessarily more than average, but according to people who have studied another course before starting medicine, they say its harder and more tasking How many such people do you know? Is that a sufficient number to derive general principles? It depends on the person and their aptitude A person may study medicine with ease and struggle with Mathematics or Physics or accounting, coding, Engineering, Architecture etc It attracts people which higher intellectual capacity than average because of the competition to gain admission not because of the difficulty of the course Many medical students are rarely pushed to their capacity Medical exams mostly test MEMORY and rarely test REASONING especially abstract reasoning as one would find in advanced mathematics or quantum physics. Essentially doctors are trained and examined as TECNICNIANS 4 Likes 1 Share |
