Shaykh (Dr) Sharof Gbadebo Raajee (hafidhohuLlaah) was asked how to greet elderly people sitting down and below is his response:

As for the one who asked about how to greet a person older than him, we have known in Islaam (that) Islaam does not allow us to kneel down for anyone and does not allow us to prostrate for anyone. It is neither insolence nor lack of reverence. Islaam taught us to revere and honour the elderly person, but does not support kneeling or prostration.

Islaam holds that ‘bowing the body, kneeling or prostration to others’ is a culture of the idolaters. We are not idolaters; we worship Allaah our creator. The Lord of all that exists is the One we worship. That's why there is none worthy of ‘bowing to or prostration to’ except our Lord, our Creator. This is the Sharee'ah law.

If you want to greet an elderly person or you want to greet your age-mate, if the person is seated, the Sharee'ah law holds that you sit down just as he is seated. You are not to greet the one who is seated while standing except if he stands coming towards you. This is the Sharee'ah law of Islaam.

You will see that when angel Jibreel, peace be upon him, came to meet the Prophet Muhammad, blessings and peace of Allaah be upon him and his family, in the picture of a human, this angel met the Prophet in a sitting position, he never hesitated to sit down. It was when he sat with the Prophet as the Prophet was seated, that he started to talk. That's it.
