A leading member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Reno Omokri has responded the Femi Fani-Kayode's recent description of Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, the vice presidential candidate of the Labour Party.

Fani Kayode, who was a former Aviation Minister in the Goodluck Jonathan administration and now a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) described Ahmed-Datti as a Mauritian refugee after the viral photo of the LP vice presidential candidate bowing respectfully to greet Kassim Shettima, the vice presidential candidate of the ruling APC.

He said in the post: "When a Mauritian refugee meets the incoming President and Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria he MUST shiver, crawl and bow.

At least Dati the Daft now knows his place.

Now that he is being a good boy we may reconsider the idea of deporting him and his brood back to Mauritius when we come to power."

Reacting to Fani Kayode's post, Reno Omokri wrote: "But Femi, don’t you think it is perhaps taking things too far to mock a man for an act of respect he gave to his elders at a place of worship, as prescribed by the Quran in multiple verses."

"Even prophet Muhammad (Salla Allahu Alayhi Wasalaam) was known to show respect, and courtesy to his elders, including a Christian priest, Waraqah ibn Nawfal. As long as Senator Baba-Ahmed is not politicizing mosque attendance, (which he is not doing), leave him be!"

"I even find what he is doing to be a mark of humility and good breeding. If I saw Peter Obi in a church, I would also greet him respectfully."


"Moreover, your geography is wrong. You have previously said Senator Baba-Ahmed is a Mauritanian (not that I agree with you). However, a Mauritanian is a native of Mauritania, not Mauritius. Citizens of Mauritius are called Mauritians."

He wrote in a different post moments after the previous: Literally millions of Nigerians originate from Mali. In Northern Nigeria, they are sometimes referred to as Mallawa, or Bamali, or Bamalle.

Some originated from Senegal, and brought with them the famous jollof rice (named after the Wolof people of Senegal). Others originated from Niger (including General Buhari) and even in Niger Republic, they have had a President believed to be of Nigerian origin (President Ibrahim Maïnassara).

We all originated from somewhere. But we are now Nigerians. If God did not will it, we would not find ourselves as Nigerians. We must now accept each other as brothers and sisters born from the womb of one mother Nigeria. Let us therefore not Mauritania shame anybody! Many ethnicities in Nigeria originate from the Congo Basin. Others were pushed Southward into modern-day Nigeria by climate change, and war.

We have elected Nigerians in the United Kingdom, where one almost became Prime Minister, in America, where a Nigerian is in President Joe Biden’s cabinet, and others are in Congress, in Canada, where one is a vice Premier and Minister, and in Poland, where one is a Parliamentarian.

This idea of tracing ancestral roots just to stigmatise people is a form of politics I will never buy into. Especially at a time when Africa is beginning to understand the power of unity, through the African Continental Free Trade Area. Can every Presidential campaign please bear this in mind as we contest for power at the February 25, 2023 election.
