Liverpool have officially reached an agreement with PSV Eindhoven to sign Manchester United target Cody Gakpo on Boxing Day.

Gakpo will leave for England imminently with his medicals already booked, according to an official statement from PSV.

The statement read: “PSV and Liverpool FC have reached an agreement on the proposed transfer of Cody Gakpo.

“The 23-year-old attacker will leave for England imminently where he will be subjected to the necessary formalities ahead of the completion of the transfer.”

PSV general manager Marcel Brands said that the transfer fee will not be made public but confirmed that the club will receive a “record transfer” from Liverpool.

The Netherlands international will sign a long-term deal at Liverpool this week, with the Reds paying a transfer fee of £37 million plus add-ons for a potential £50 million package, according to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano.

The 23-year-old came close to joining Leeds United last summer but opted to continue at PSV after the then Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal called him to snub the move to Elland Road.

He had a strong performance at the World Cup in Qatar, scoring three goals in five games and helping the Netherlands national team reach the quarter-finals.

Gakpo has scored nine goals with 12 assists in the Dutch league this season for PSV.

Liverpool have made the quick coup to secure Gakpo’s services with forwards Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz facing lengthy spells on the sidelines.

The transfer will also be officially confirmed by Liverpool in the coming days.
