I think the reformation of Police in Nigeria should start with withdrawal of AK-47 from most officers and replace with light weapons, only specifically trained force should carry war weapons.

Thank you. I have raised this issue severally, but the system is bad and we need to reform and it start from this........

Weapons acquisition should be made open to citizens. That's the only way to reduce crime which will in turn render the Police weapons irrelevant.


1. A common thief usually avoids a house with dogs. An armed robber doesn't mind because he can shoot the dogs dead but an armed robber will think twice about robbing a house because he is not sure if there is a gun in it. He is at a disadvantage because the homeowner knows the house better and will outsmart him.

2. The government cannot bully or threaten citizens with guns (like the Lekki Massacre) because they have theirs too.

3. Kidnappers, bandits will have a tougher time.


Arm the citizenry and crime will reduce.

Our policing system is not it at all, police shouldn't be carrying AK-47 openly......

That is exactly what is obtainable in the US. The only anarchy will be the one created by the government.

They should conduct psychological evaluation on Nigerian police before giving them guns

Security operations in this country need a total overhaul. IMHO, this overhaul needs to start and be effective by putting security infrastructure cum robust surveillance system in place. New officers need to be vigorously trained on Ethics and Society as a study and advanced law enforcement. This is what will guide the operations of security personnel.

Not all offences need to be responded to by the use of guns. Pepper spray and batons should be used in more populated areas while officers in special/tactical unit can carry rifles for rapid response in isolated or high threat areas.

I don't see any reasons why a police officer should put his/her gun off safety and pull the trigger directly aimed at a suspect when there's no imminent threat perceived from the suspect. It absolutely makes no sense!

There are some people who should not even smell a police uniform talk less of putting it on and holding a gun. When the system is weak and corrupt, wrong people are employed in the wrong positions and things fall apart.

Sadly, the Nigerian government chooses to sleep and snore.

This reminds me of a small protest we did in 2020 that lasted for 3 months. The sad truth is Nigerians aren't ready to take back their country. Nigerians please it's high time we wake up

Why it's that is because the police was not instituted with the primary aim of protecting the citizens. It was instituted to protect the elites and government property. It was what was obtainable during the colonial era that is still being practiced.

Bro forget that matter. Let Nigerians agitate uncompromisingly for State/regional policing and every region can then evolve the police force that suits the disposition of their people.

Creating a professional, effective and successful police force goes far beyond the choice of weapons the police carries.

It is about orientation, training , adequate pay and remuneration packages, dedication to crime fighting, investigative diligence, preemptive policing driven by science, technology and intelligence etc, etc, etc.

Let every state, or at least region, have their own police force. We will never win against insecurity, crime and unlawful killings by the NPF otherwise.

I don't know why we like regression in Nigeria. Same way people give unconvincing and untenable reasons for retaining open grazing till Yorubas decided enough is enough.

Has the sky fallen since SW State houses of assembly banned open grazing across the region?
