This thread is a Sequel to this 2021 thread https://www.nairaland.com/6917749/what-lessons-learnt-2021

Yearly reflections are an important exercise we ought to practice in our life.
We need to review the year and ruminate on our past actions, mistakes, lessons and triumphs.

Learning is a continuous process of human existence and we need to always note down annual lessons which help us prepare for the coming year.

1. POWER DOESN'T CORRUPT PEOPLE
Power does not corrupt men; fools, however, if they get into a position of power, corrupt power.
– George Bernard Shaw

This quote to me goes much beyond power and enter into an often overlooked psychological truth.

Nice and good people aren’t often nice at all.
They’re just afraid of speaking up.

If one day these shy and too nice people were given all the power, would we see a different side of them?
Power doesn't corrupt people, it is people who corrupt power
.
2. IF YOU HAVE TO TELL PEOPLE YOU ARE SOMEONE THEN YOU AREN'T

If you have to say it then you aren't.

Power is by attitude not by platitude. Power is demonstrated not said with words.

John Maxwell says the proof of leadership is not in the title, but in the number of those who want to follow you.

Similarly, power is an aura, a state of being and having. You should be able to convey it without showing your badge.

3. GOOD THINGS DON'T COME EASY

Let him who wants peace, prepare for war.
–The 33 Strategies of War, Robert Greene

The above quotes puts two seemingly antithetic concepts in the same sentence.

In reality they come hand in hand.

To enjoy the positive you need to also endure the negative.
Pain begets pleasure, hard times begets good times, failure begets success.

4. THE WORLD IS COMPLEX : IT AIN'T JUST BLACK AND WHITE.

The world is not just black and white, good or bad it it usually in-between.

If you think everyone in the world is good or the world is generally a good place, bad people will come and take advantage of you.

If you think the world is totally bad you will end up alienating good people.
The world is not black and white. It is more accurate to refer to it as grey.

Good and bad is like a wavelength. Good people can turn bad and bad can turn good.

The world can be anything. Shit happens.

5. HUMAN INSATIABILITY

Our wants and needs as human are insatiable.

We want what we don't have and have what we don't want.
When we have it we don't see the importance but when we lose it we want it back.

By nature, we humans are not easily contented with our circumstances.
The moment we possess something or get what we want, our minds begin to drift toward something new and different, to imagine we can have better.

6. LIFE WORKS BY PRINCIPLES

If you break the rules of LIFE the rules will inturn break you.

Life has principles and doesn't care about who you are, if you break the rules the rules you will pay dearly for it.

Everything in life has rules and principles and we are bound to follow them whether we are aware of them or not.

7. PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS BEGETS UNHAPPINESS

Beneath our quest for happiness is a poison of unhappiness.

Built into our search for happiness is a poison pill that guarantees unhappiness.

This is highly because humans have the strong ability to adapt.

8. SUNK COST FALLACY

Whatever you do in life , always remember the fallacy of sunk cost. When it's time to let go do so.

No matter how far you go down the wrong road you can always turn back, don't allow ego to complicate your life.

No matter how far down the wrong road you’ve traveled, always turn back.

People hate to lose time “invested” in a task they have miscalculated on.

Time is the most scarce resource of life, yet it’s taken for granted by those who are too proud to admit they made a mistake.

9. WORRY IS A WASTE

Do not self sabotage your self because of self pity.

Worry is time wasting , you keep yourself busy doing nothing.

80% of what we worry about never happens and if it does happen, it is not as terrible as we imagined.

Let's say what we worry about finally happens. It will come and go and life continuous, nothing last forever.

10. MONEY IS ESSENTIAL

Besides family and health, money should be your number 1 priority.

Money is not the root of all evil , lack of money instead is the root of all evil.
Money is neutral—it’s paper. It’s just a medium of exchange— nothing more, nothing less.

We have been conditioned since childhood to believe that wanting money is wrong and unethical. Yet the entire world seems to run on money.

What lessons have you learnt?
