I don't think you are more lettered than most of the policemen you see on the road. The killing was totally condemnable, I am sure it wasn't intentional, there might be spiritual involvement difficult to digest most criminally minded individuals are using this unfortunate incident to smear the NPF. The stereotype won't just jump.

@bolded - You fvcked your argument up.

The politicians are 'the system '. They make laws that inturn define the system. It is better we know this. When we elect the right leaders, they will make and enforce the right laws.

Total waste of tax payers' money....

The sad part is....he wont get more than 5 years for involuntary man slaughter.... unless a good lawyer can provide a history of violence, negligence, or aggression on duty...

He might even walk away with ordinary dismissal....
Very unfair. For cases like this, an eye for an eye should be applied, the rest will learn, funny how they don't want to die but are happy cutting short innocent lives.

See how this man just wasted his years in service over his inability to control himeself. Although, he may get away with this. The judicial system is so messed up that he can get a good lawyer and plead for manslaughter. I know an ex police officer who did something similar. He spent years in jail and was eventually released. And to the family of the slain lawyer, may they find the fortitude to deal with her death.

If one is a non-nigerian or a nigerian outside of this country and you are to rely on this comments on this forum perhaps, one might be forced to believe that indeed, there is no sort of justice in this country.

What makes you think he will get away with this?

For a reminder, the police officer who killed a young man at a viewing center somewhere in Lagos has been sentenced to death. To take you back in time, the officer that killed those young boys and girls in Abuja some years back was sentenced to death. There are others cases like that that are in the public domain. But typical of Nigerians, the moment they are fixdated on a particular erroneous belief, boom, nothing can change that.

The judicial system is messed up and yet formers governors were sent to prison? Indeed.

So, even if you commit an offence like manslaughter and get a good lawyer then, you are out pronto like the police officer you know?

It amazes one when you read comments of people who are presumably educated even if it is half eduaction on this forum.

Truth is, with a mentality like this, you are part of the problem.

Happy New Year.

Nigeria with a dumb law!
If the this Police life is taken in response to his offence them we have two bereaved families left to their fate!
FG has nothing to lose at the end of the day but the two families are worse off on all sides just like that.
I think a responsive government should focus more on compensation for damages that does actually bring a form relief to the bereaved and also a lifetime lesson to the offender without leaving them both families in a total destitution and pains.

The death of Barrister Bolanle Raheem under the circumstances reported in the news breaks my heart. What a tragic and unfortunate incident eliciting many unanswered questions. I empathise with her spouse and family, who had to go through that shock firsthand and sadly something they will live with for the rest of their lives. A life altering trauma. May God rest the soul of the faithful departed and grant her family the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.

I don't know much about the modus operandi of the Nigeria Police force operations and their particular commitment to delivering world class service, that truly highlights their fundamental objectives. This incident is loudly calling our collective attention to some salient issues that needs immediate review. I will try to populate here some of the critical dimensions.

1. Police Recruitment and Onboarding Procedure: This aspect for me is fundamental and critical to the success of the entire Policing touch points. Is there a consistent strategy, that ensures core values are defined and measures behavioral/cultural alignment? With the huge responsibilities the force is saddled with, the Talent Aquisition (attraction, hiring and retention) process must be apt and robust.

There is also a place for onboarding and sieving during the first months of hire to coach broadly and reaffirm the correctness of the hiring decision. Getting this right will feed the employee pipeline with driven and committed potentials that will add value to the service.

2. Mandatory Continuous Training and Refresher Scheme: Change is infinite ♾️, so training must be structured as continuous. The L&grin team of the Police force must partner with professional organizations like CIPM, NIM et al. to develop a thorough/bespoke curriculum. If we ask, the individual who killed Mrs. Raheem, can his training records be published? When last was he trained and what topics were covered? The Force must understand the critical competencies matrix for various Cadre in their rankings and calibrate incumbents against this to ensure gaps are bridged through a detailed training plan.

The NPF must invest in cloud based digital learning solutions that can facilitate always-on learning in the force. The easier and accessible the learning resources, the better the chances for it to be effective.

3. Amour Maintenance: When I first read about the incident. In my deep thought, I probed, could a policeman wake up in the morning with the sole desire to kill a pregnant woman in the presence of her spouse and wards, unprovoked? While I know we live in a sick world, I doubt this could have been his ambition! So, what went wrong. Carelessness, maybe, faulty safe button, no safe button, lack of depth from the officer to even check (not plausible - that should be basic), when was the gun checked or serviced last. Assests as this with mechanical parts requires programmed preventive and corrective maintenance. A unit must be responsible for ensuring this is done as and when required and duly logged in the Police Information System. The system thus fails the people she watches over and her workforce if there is laxity with this. When I see how poorly maintained Police some operational vehicles are, I worry if this isn't the same story for other assets behind the scenes.

4. Proactive Field Inspection/Audits and Response: Internal Affairs should have a way to gather internal intelligence within the Force. Some of these people-based issues may have presented some precursory red flags if proactively checked. Random blood work, breath analysis, etc. may already show issues around drug abuse and alcoholism.

There is also a place for counseling and campaigns on emotional and mental wellbeing within the Police Force. You can only counsel if you know something is wrong or create an enabling environment that facilitate disclosure and support.

The output of this process can also inform the Police Force training and development investments while also supporting the performance management and reward process.

5. Performance Management and Performance Database: The strategic objectives of the force must be clear to its entire population and goals/objectives must be set at various levels of its hierarchy to drive the attainment of those lofty overarching targets.

It's not enough to have those goals setting and evaluation process only, the system to do it must be adequate and must be structured and accessible for analytics and inform the decision process around rewards (promotion, posting, bonus, salary increase etc.), training, etc.

6. Remuneration: this will require a through surgical review. If you pay bananas, you will hire monkeys! The reward must be commensurate fairly to the responsibilities of the role. While I beloved you can reward an unscrupulous person enough to be honest, yet you don't want to stretch your trained hands towards graft, so they can survive and put a meal on the table. Meaningful initiatives to support the housing, health, retirement etc. needs of the workforce remains critical.

I trust that the law will take its course on the suspect who murdered Barrister Raheem in cold blood. Beyond this, we must move beyond reactive measures of addressing the symptoms of a much deeper malady and begin to proactively scrutinize the entire Police Institution toward re-engineering it for improved service delivery and better risk responses.

Much said already. We will hopefully get there some day.

You guys should allow due process. The accused is innocent untill proven guilty by a competent court of jurisdiction. The legal process most be allowed to run to logical conclusion. If the state can prove there case beyond reasonable doubt...then he will go for it ...I am afraid they charge of first degree murder might not stand in this case cos ...this asp didn't wake up with the intention of killing this woman ...second degree murder might stand . If I were the I will amend the charges...before the court throws it out for lack of merit .

Na accumulated curse over the years caught up with this accursed fellow. Someone that has been in the police service for over 30yrs who is quite experienced has no reason to shoot that innocent woman to death and it's quite unfortunate that beautiful and responsible daughter, aunt, wife n mother, has to be the sacrificial lamb but there are curses so potent an evil man can't escape it n that was exactly what brought down this cursed pig. I'm sure he himself can't even believe that he actually pull the trigger. No reason at all.

Investigation in Nigeria is usually poorly done. They often don't get to the root of the matter.

The police officer was sent to assassinate her. The question is who sent her?

The husband should also be investigated.

May justice be served in this case. I believe it's God who wants it that the ASP be nabbed and punished for all atrocities he had perpetuated during his career in the Police Force. There is an allegation that he was the Constable that killed a Custom Officer in the early '90's in Niger state and went scott free (unperturbed). May karma hold him down this time around!. Just look at his countenance; no remorse whatsoever.
The coincidence of the victim being a lawyer and invariably putting the NBA in perspective is divine. May this killer cop find no mercy in this world and in the next.

I don't even know what to say on this issue.
But I sure know that Nigeria has not gotten to the level that a police officer will shoot into a car at a simple stop and search without even knowing the occupants with an intention to kill.

I mean, we have not gotten to that level of lawlessness yet.
Justice must be served, but this officer, his arms, his unit, etc should be seriously investigated, for us to avert a future reoccurrence. Something is seriously wrong somewher.
