Court marriage does not mean properties will be shared 50/50 in the case of a divorce.

Court marriage does not mean the woman will have custody of the kids in the case of a divorce.

Court marriage does not mean divorce must be granted.

Only a judge can dissolve a marriage joined in court and he or she will take cognizance of the following

1. Is there a prenuptial agreement?

2. On what basis is divorce requested? eg long months of separation, non consummation, infidelity, premarital deception, etc.

3. Are there health grounds or character impairments on which custody of kids (if any) are to be granted.

4. Joint contributions to child upbringing until they are 18 years old.

5. Personal worth before marriage was instituted.

And more.

These are the things a judge will consider before granting a divorce, dividing assets, debts, and liabilities, grant custody of kids and visiting rights, etc.

So you can't just wake up tomorrow and expect a judge to give you 50% of properties, or expect rosy things from a divorce when your reasons are not worth a good tangibility. The judge will just tell you to carry your bag and be going.

Fortunately for our marriage under the act, the judges take cognizance of our peculiarities in this Nigerian/African environment while dissolving marriages. It is unlike what is obtained in the western nations.
