A former Minister of Education, Obiageli Ezekwesili, has raised concerns over the 2023 National budget, describing it as “hopeless”.

The PUNCH reports that the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), signed the 2023 Budget of N21.83tn along with the 2022 Supplementary Appropriation Bill into law.

Buhari signed the 2023 transition budget Tuesday morning at the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, in the presence of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Senate President Ahmad Lawan, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, and other members of the Federal Executive Council.

Speaking at the event, the President said his regime would speed up critical infrastructure projects nationwide as it raced toward the finish line on May 29, 2023.

He noted that the budget is N21.83 trillion aggregate expenditure, an increase N1.32 trillion over the initial executive proposal of N20.51 trillion. It is the eighth and final budget of Buhari’s regime.

But reacting to the budget on Wednesday via her Twitter page, Ezekwesili decried the budget deficit, adding that it was important for Nigerians to get their Permanent Voter Cards.

She wrote, “This is the summary of the HOPELESS Budget @MBuhari signed into law yesterday:

“Total Expenditure is N21.83 trillion.

“Total Revenue N9.73 trillion!

“The Budget has a deficit larger than revenue by almost N12.00 trillion! Tragic.

“You all better get your PVCs ready because…”

2023 Budget of 21.8 trillion naira. 30% of it (6.6 trillion naira) will be used to service debt.
APC/Buhari has finished this country!!

USA spend between 4 and 5 % of their national budget to service debt.

While Nigeria will spend about 30% of the national budget to service debt in 2023.

A poor country spending 30% to service debt VS a rich country spending 4.5% to service debt.

Na dem.. This lousy woman worked with OBJ notoriously famous for padding the budget and bribing the Senate to have the budget passed. Since 1999, we have been operating budget deficit even when oil was sold at an all time high, yet our budget performance was less than 50% with nothing to show for it, rather our national assets were sold for cheap to friends and cronies. But today, the budget performance has improved, despite the borrowings, the country is witnessing a fresh breathe of massive infrastructures, far more improved electricity, the military are far more equipped with sophisticated weapons and fighter jets for the first time since 43 years ago. The last time our military was last equipped was during Shagari regime.
Pls. tell this woman to keep shut, everything is not muscle.

When you think of the point Oby raised, you will understand that you have a clueless man who cannot even think beyond his anus as your president!

People voted for Buhari twice clear-headed. They weren't drugged when they made that decision. Nigerians deserve the kind of leaders they get.

Femi continue showcasing the worst side of Yorubas for all and sundry. The good thing is that not all Femi are unrepentant liars and political jobbers like you. All you urchins that propped up the worst administration to ever exist in Nigeria will be relegated to the dark annals of Nigerian history soon.

And yet, during their regime, we were almost debt free as a nation. Nigeria had one of the best economic team and we were one of the best economic revolution then.

Don’t mislead people. Leave the messenger and get the message

Nigeria deserves better

The NIPP power projects. I know you don’t understand. The phone you’re using to type was one breaking revolution of their regime. Cleaning our debt profile to almost nothing. You can’t understand the meaning of debt free since PMB is debt personified

Well, you asked for one thing, I decided to state upto 3... ignorance, poverty and illiteracy is our greatest weapon and the politicians know this

Do you even understand what it takes to be a foundational government. A government taken from military to democracy?

We deserve better.
God bless Nigeria

We're talking about budget performance here, not debt forgiveness. There's nothing best about an economic team that squandered $16b power funds and sold national assets at scrap value.
