The USA never invaded to stay in Afghanistan, they were to hand power over yo the Afghan national army, and they the Afghan failed. Not the USA..

20 years in Afghanistan and the US led ISAF could only barely control major population centres only, not the rural areas which accounts for most of Afghanistan landmass. Same coalition ran away when the Taliban overan Kabul (aka Saigon 2.0)

The Russians on the other hand with a force of just 190k men took over 20% of Ukrainian territory in it's most industrial heartland, plus 80% of it's coastline and 100% control of the Azov. While doing that, the Russians wiped out most of Ukraines initial and recent military inventory and have wrecked Ukraine critical infrastructure (power, transport).

Btw note that Bakhmut is not like Izyum where the Ukrainians were doing thunder runs in a massive area sparsely protected by only 2,000 Russian Guardsmen and militias. In Bakhmut, Russian Wagner have basically turned it to a Ukrainian meat grinder with Ukraine suffering horrific losses.

If Russia get hold of bakhmut the morale of the UAF will drop. Because it is the most fortified city in Ukraine as at now.
