Terrorism: Changes of top security chiefs soon

By KINGSLEY OMONOBI
ABUJA— Indications emerged, yesterday, in Abuja, that following the recurring insecurity occasioned by the Boko Haram menace and the second successful bombing in Abuja, at the UN House, President Goodluck Jonathan will soon carry out changes in the top hierarchy of the nation’s security establishment.

It was gathered that top security personnel including the service chiefs and those at the other intelligence networks, in the country would be relieved of their appointments as a result of the President’s dissatisfaction with excuses being offered for the lapses that resulted to the UN House bombing in particular.

At top of those being considered for the changes, according to sources, is that of a retired four-star General who it is believed has so far failed to carry out a successful coordination of the security agencies to the extent that security agencies are now working at cross- purposes while there is a clear lack of synergy among intelligence agencies.

Though this are the reasons being sold to President Jonathan to effect the change, the President is however said to be very cautious of such advice owing to experiences of the past which he acquired while he was the Vice-President during which he discovered that some of the people that served in the Presidency at one point or the other, may have played the double game in their dealings.

It was gathered that Jonathan is being guided in this regard by the fact that those being proposed as replacements are those that fall in the category of double dealers while reports available to him indicate that the four-star general has operated with 100 per cent openness with him.

Aside the Intelligence apparatus, Vanguard was further informed that owing specifications of the terms and conditions of service of the armed forces, some service chiefs are to be relieved of their positions to make way for others to grow and for new ideas in tackling the spate of insecurity in the nation see the light of day.

While noting that the appointment of a new Chief of Defence Intelligence, Major-General Sani Yakubu Audu to take over from Major General Babagana Monguno was along this line, Vanguard was told that some of the service chiefs have not only spent more that 35 years in service which is contained in the terms and conditions, two of them have passed the age limit of 56 years requirement.

Vanguard further gathered that while one of the service chiefs that may be affected could be excused over his age limit due to the fact of his elevated appointment, the other service chief was due for retirement in January 2010 but was saved by providence following his appointment as a service chief in the last quarter of that year.

It is quite unfortunate that our govt think that changing security personel will be way out of the present predicament;the solution is very simple, create jobs for the youth, give efcc free will to operate, because we cannot pretend that our government is not currupt, immagine i read todays paper that says the un bomber was a welder, who was paid N10M,as we all know curruption in govt is the root caused of poverty in our land, the gap btw the rich and the poor is getting wider everyday, there is no middle class in nigeria, inviting mussad, fbi, ctu, with tax payer money will not amount to anything.JOHNATHAN FACE THE THRUTH,YOU ARE SLOWER THAN BABA YAR'ADUA,Your govt talk to much.

Yeah, it's good to kick out the non-performing heads of security agencies but the changes should even be deeper and more far-reaching.  The new heads should be tasked to reform the various agencies (Police, Immigration, Customs, SSS, etc) within a specified period of time.

The reform should be compulsory and not be a fire-brigade approach even if it means setting up brand new agencies and scrapping inept ones much like the way EFCC was created.

How can we expect the Police to perform when they collect/extort meagerly sums from drivers in the full glare of the public?  Or how can Immigration/Customs that have become a menace at airports and borders (land and sea) be efficient?

The Boko Haram debacle is just one of the many signs of the pervading rot in these agencies, it is not the only one.  Before the other forms of rot become monsters like Boko Haram, this is the time to do soul-searching, stock-taking, and courageous earth-shaking reforms.   Mr President should take it upon himself to drive this.

How can a decision that is being taken/considered almost a year after the October 1 blasts be hasty?
Re: Boko Haram: Changes Of Top Security Chiefs Soon by odogwux(m): 10:32am On Sep 06, 2011
GEJ has to be very careful because he knows he is surrounded by wolves and he aint a wolf. The security apparatus is dominated and headed mainly by northerners and current trends show that almost half of the top brass with caliphate backing are boko haram sympathisers
Re: Boko Haram: Changes Of Top Security Chiefs Soon by islamrules(m): 10:41am On Sep 06, 2011
After replacing those generals, we can now replace GEJ himself.
Re: Boko Haram: Changes Of Top Security Chiefs Soon by bisiaet: 10:44am On Sep 06, 2011
It is a good move I support it because when the security arm and their boss are now argueing on who heard about the blast first and who do not then something is wrong and a drastic decision need to be taken.

We all know we are in nation whereby you can never hear any body says I resign because of his error or because of his insensitive in a crucial matter then then the right thing to do is to lay them off by authority above them because without doing this Boko animal will not stop and untill the battle is bring to their door step and step on whoever toes that is connected or the sponsorer this animals to safe this country they wont stop.

Let Gej removed anyone find wanting among them failure to live up to the expectation is nothing but a failure so exit door is the next option.

Those who had promised to make Nigeria ungovernable are the fingers of manipulation around this problem Nigeria is facing in the hand of this Boko animals and GEJ should be ready to put fire under their a s s without any fear or panic.

Gej should bin all this slow motion approach he should go for them they think they are too powerful and too untourchable let see what they got and let see who will suffer it most. Animals. Imaoo!!!

GEJ has to be very careful because he knows he is surrounded by wolves and he aint a wolf.

He didn't see the wolves as the Deputy Governor, Governor, Vice President, Acting President, and President? If no, is his sight/vision so poor? If yes, how come he's yet to acquaint himself with the system so that he can free himself or wrestle them to the ground?
