The Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, will not be retiring when he turns 60 years on March 1, 2023, the Minister of Police Affairs, Mohammed Dingyadi, said on Wednesday.

Dingyadi’s comments followed fresh concerns about the IGP’s possible retirement amidst the 2023 elections.

Baba turns 60 on March 1, 2023; four days after the presidential election and 10 days before the governorship elections holding on February 25 and March 11, respectively.

According to the minister, the Police Act 2020 gives the IGP a four-year tenure which cannot be interrupted by retirement age.

Responding to a question from our correspondent on whether or not the IGP would retire at 60 like other civil servants, Dingyadi said, Let me say that by the provision of the Police Act 2020, the IG is now supposed to have a kind of four-year period and Mr. President has already given him letter of appointment in that regard.

So the issue of IG going out during this election period does not arise.

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), appointed the then-DIG Baba as the acting IGP on April 6, 2021.

Two months later, the Police Council confirmed him as the substantive head of the Force.

At least 290 senior officers are expected to retire from service between January and March 2023, findings show.

They include three Deputy Inspectors-General and scores of Assistant Inspectors-General, 10 Commissioners of Police, five Deputy Commissioners of Police, over 20 Assistant Commissioners of Police, more than 35 Chief Superintendents of Police, 47 Superintendents of Police, 55 Deputy Superintendents of Police and 70 Assistant Superintendents of Police.

Dingyadi also revealed that the FEC approved a draft bill for an Act to establish Nigeria Police Force College Training School and Institutions.

He said the piece of legislation will only give legal backing to about 20 existing training institutions nationwide, and not to build new ones.

Why should the IG retire?, bad officials don't retire in this APC government, they stay on to inflict more hardship on innocent youths.

When their presidential candidate is 89 years, who needs to retire when they're trying to run their government on gerontocracy.

The impunity under this administration is second to none. if you like vote APC again, the constitution will be definitely suspended to give room to maximum brutality. Lekki toll gate massacre will be child's play! So the law can be changed arbitrarily!

When is the constitutional date of retirements for civil and public servants in the country?
Is the police reform act bigger than the Nigerian constitution?
If the police chief was from the south, will they still allow him to continue for another 4 years having reach the 60yrs mark?

This law was made because of the last IGP saga, at some point we almost had 2 IGP's at the same time, one was in Edo state on assignment while the second one was in Abuja.

They keep making laws to Favour their pockets - It is changing with Peter Obi, laws will be made to favour the people

One of the reasons there are gross indiscipline across board and we are unable to put an end to insecurity is NEPOTISM fueled by BUHARI! If he is a Southerner a northern replacement would have been found for him!

That's the average age of generals all over the world. It takes many years of service before you can climb to the top. His age at 60 isn't an issue

The constitution is silent on the retirement age of civil servants.

SO IT WAS TRUE AFTER ALL

Meanwhile, "IG is retiring on March 6, 2023 and rumours are going round that the IGP wants to use this arrears money to lobby for extension."

Recall that in November 2022, SaharaReporters reported that over 50 personnel of the Nigeria Police Force who were detained for complaining about the non-payment of their six months' arrears of the new salary structure which the President Muhammadu Buhari government approved for the Force in 2021.

The aggrieved police officers have since been embarking on protests over the unpaid salary arrears
