shortgun:
This drug Dexamethasone was prescribed by doctors in a Government hospital for my dad, getting to the pharmacy I was told that NAFDAC have stopped pharmacies from selling the drug and confiscated the ones in their warehouses.

I put a call across to the doctor to speak with the pharmacist about the development. After asking the pharmacist when the drug was withdrawn from circulation and other things the doctor insisted I get the drug in another pharmacy that have it in stock, this is after the pharmacist stood her ground that the drug is no longer safe as directed by NAFDAC.
I've gotten the drug but I am still not sure if I should let my dad take it cos of this confusion.
What do you guys think?
This brand of dexamethasone was ban by NAFDAC some months ago. You should have just gotten another brand

As per what you got?

It is not fake.

Consult your pharmacist if you are not so sure about it's safety

if u dont trust the dexamethasone, u can take prednisone inplace of it, both are steroid which act fast to stop inflammation in the body and it suppress the immunity, also the side effect is very bad and can cause diabetic if taken for long term. some people with autoimmune disorder can take that drug daily

There are specific reasons why the doctor will want your father to use the drug "Dexamethasone" .

It is a Steriod medication...that is use with caution, as such the doctor or doctors in question must have evaluated him and found it necessary for him. It is not a drug to use without doctor prescription as it has side effects which the doctor will prevent as he uses the drug.

The concern of the pharmacist might have been a batch of the drug
..not the drug it self. NAFDAC cannot ban a drug like dexamethasone because of it's benefits but if a batch of it or a specific brand was found to be unsafe ....then they can recall those specific one.

My 2kobo submission ...It's not a fake drug. It is used with caution on doctors instructions.

Cheers 🥂

Dexamethasone is more potent than prednisolone

There are specific indications to prescribe each one.

Some other big pharma wants it out of the market. Watch how an alternative will spring up from nowhere.

Please how many pharmacists have you confirmed the ban from? It seems you trust the pharmacist more than the doctor.
For me, make more investigations before your conclusion ok

If your dad condition is not that bad you can still wait to confirm and if you trust the doctor you can use it for him but if you don’t trust him wait oooooo

LaIabobo:
NAFDAC released an advisory that there are some substandard brands of this drug in circulation.

That doesn't mean all Dexamethasone are fake.

However, this particular brand was part of the substandard ones listed by NAFDAC last year.

Check number 18 on the list below...

When did NAFDAC ban dexamethasone, a drug that was widely used during COVID 19 and effective? Some pharmacist are funny though. It can never be banned it may be put on prescription list which is normal thing

Op listen to the Pharmacist. I've had similar personal experience in the past. The doctor recommended a drug for me to buy at the hospital's pharmacy (a Federal Government Hospital for that matter).

May God bless that pharmacist. She advised me not to buy the recommended drug. I asked why? She told me it causes kidney failure and liver problems. She said it'll surely cure what I was taking it for, but a bigger problem will arise later. She advised that I google the side effects of the drug when I get home. Seeing her deep care and sincerity, I opted for the alternative drug she introduced to me right at the counter. And I was perfectly ok after taking them.

And through to her words, the side effects were very scary. It's an antibiotic. You can't take it before or after meal. You take it while eating. If you disobey, you face the repercussion immediately. I named it Satanic Drug!

It's not fake, the drug was probably banned or controlled because a lot of Nigerian girls are abusing it (using it for it's adverse effect which is weight gain.. and the consequences of misusing the drug are very life threatening.

Same way they discouraged us from using chloroquine for malaria, instead they introduced a athemeter nonsense so people will have to keep coming back to buy meds.

Some Batches of Xasten (Vixa brand of dexamethasone tablets) were withdrawn from circulation some months back due to certain concerns by authorities, for this reason many Pharmacys and prescribers have ruled out the brand for the time being.

My advice is to go for another brand of dexamethasone, a brand that has no negative affiliations. Ensure that you obtain the right strength of the drug (either 0.5mg or 1mg ) please let your Pharmacist guide you, Dexamethasone is a steroid and wrong usage may lead to harm.
