Gas Cylinder: Save A Life; Know The Expiry Date by OCLOCKNEWS: 6:08pm On Jan 22, 2023
Gas cylinders are necessary components in our kitchens, and they are found in practically every home. It’s crucial to remember that a gas cylinder can be just as harmful as it is valuable if certain parameters aren’t regularly monitored.

Many gas cylinder explosions have occurred, resulting in the loss of lives and the destruction of property worth millions. It’s distressing to think that so many individuals are unaware that gas cylinders have expiration dates.

Here are some warning signals to look out for, as well as recommendations to help you figure out when your gas cylinder needs to be replaced:
The lifespan of cooking gas cylinders is limited to five years.

The majority of people who use gas cylinders have no idea when they were purchased.

It is crucial to keep track of the days and to replace gas cylinders as soon as possible.

Do not purchase used gas cylinders.

Keep an eye on the expiration dates:

How Do You Check The Expiry Date Of A Gas Cylinder
The steps for checking the expiration date are straightforward and effective.

An LPG cylinder’s expiration date can be spotted on one of the metal strips that link the cylinder’s body to the top ring (handle).

It is mentioned on the strip’s inner side.

Any letter of the alphabet from A to D, as well as a number, is painted on the strip.

It’s easy to decode the expiration date.

The alphabet denotes the month in which it expires, while the number denotes the year.

The letter specifies the month in which it expires, while the number denotes the year.

There are four quarters in a year:
A – January to March

B – April to June

C – July to September;

D – October to December.

Safety Measures To Adopt When Using/Handling Gas Cylinder
The metal strip on your cylinder, for example, is painted with “A 18.”

The letter “A” stands for the month of March, and the number 18 stands for the year 2018.

Unless explicitly designed to be used otherwise, store gas cylinders vertically.

Ensure that cylinders are securely fastened to prevent them from falling over.

Ensure that the regulator and pipe-work are acceptable for the type of gas and pressure being used before connecting a gas cylinder to equipment or pipe-work.

When handling gas cylinders, use appropriate safety shoes and other personal protective equipment as needed.

Do not utilize gas cylinders for anything other than transporting and storing gas.

Gas cylinders should not be dropped, rolled, or dragged.

When a gas cylinder is not in use, close the cylinder valve and replace the dust covers as needed.

Fit cylinders with residual pressure valves (non-return valves) where suitable to limit the danger of water or other materials backflowing into the cylinder during usage which might corrode it (e.g. beer forced into an empty gas cylinder during cylinder change-over).

Make sure the valve is protected by a valve cap or collar, or that the valve has been built to withstand impact if the cylinder is dropped.

Gas cylinders should be kept in a dry, secure place on a flat surface. If this is not possible, store it in a well-ventilated building or in a part of a building that has been set aside for this purpose.

Cylinders carrying flammable gas should not be kept in a structure that is utilized for other purposes.

Gas cylinders should be kept away from sources of ignition and other flammable materials and should be protected from external heat sources that could compromise their mechanical integrity.

Avoid placing gas cylinders in positions where they will stand or lie in water.

Ensure that the valve on empty cylinders is kept closed to prevent pollutants from entering it.

When not in use, keep gas cylinders in a secure place. Unless they are designed to be free-standing, they should be adequately restricted. Gas cylinders must be adequately labeled to indicate what they contain and the hazards they pose.

Store cylinders in a location where they are not at risk of being damaged by impact, such as from forklift trucks.

How To Determine The Quantity of Gas In A Cylinder
The majority of us have experienced a circumstance in which the gas cylinder has run out while we are cooking. It’s difficult for anyone to know how much gas is remaining in an LPG cylinder.
