Ifeanyi Okowa, the current governor of Delta state, and James Ibori, a former governor of the same state, are now engaged in a power struggle over the PDP’s governorship ticket.

According to a report by The Punch, PDP members are concerned that their party may not have a governorship candidate for the 2023 general elections due to the ongoing cold war between the two party leaders.

Sheriff Oborevwori, who won the party’s governorship primary and submitted his name to the INEC, was not listed on the INEC’s recently released list of the candidates nominated by political parties for the 2023 governorship and state assembly elections in all of the country’s constituencies. The PDP in Delta has not yet announced a candidate for the governor’s race in 2019, according to Monday Udoh-Tom, the state’s INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner. He also noted that there are no specifics regarding any potential candidates for the party.

According to him, the electoral authority must wait for the Court of Appeal’s decision about the legitimate governorship candidate for the party in Delta. Sheriff Oborevwori, the incumbent speaker of the state House of Assembly, won the PDP governorship primary. David Edevbie, his closest challenger and the former chief of staff to Okowa, filed a petition with the Abuja High Court to have Oborevwori disqualified due to inconsistencies in the credentials he had submitted.

The High Court later granted Edevbie’s requests by determining the plaintiff to be the party’s candidate and disqualified Oborevwori. Edevbie’s followers have been delighted, asserting that INEC recognized their principal as a candidate by granting him form E13B, despite Oborevwori filing an appeal against the ruling.

Okowa vs. Ibori Cold War: While Oborevwori is supported by Okowa, the PDP vice presidential candidate, Edevbie is Ibori’s chosen candidate. Ibori may also have had a significant role in Okowa’s election as state governor in 2015, despite the fact that he was serving a jail sentence in the United Kingdom at the time. Kingsley Esiso, the party’s state chairman, called on party members to maintain their composure in response to the news and said INEC had instructed all parties to do the same while legal procedures were being completed. Julius Akpovoka, the director of operations for the David Edevbie Campaign Organization, however, accused parties in the lawsuit contesting Oborevwori’s eligibility of siding with one party over another.
