Advice To Newbies: Coding Is Very Hard!!! by Devdevdev(f): 4:35pm On Jan 28, 2023
Coding is the hardest thing I have ever done. I was once a medical student, then I changed to engineering. I've done pharmacology, biochemistry, thermodynamics. All this pale in comparison to JavaScript, which still entends to other stuff like react, redux, typescript, NODEJS etc.

And JavaScript isn't even the hardest language, there is Java and #C and C++.

Even ordinary CSS that isn't even a programming language can take months to understand and most people never get to understand it, let alone get proficient at it.

Don't believe all the things you read online from people that want to entice you to pay money to learn to code in six months. They are liars. Don't be lured in by the testimonies you read of people getting high paying jobs after learning to code for few months. These are outliers. The majority of those learning to code either give up after few weeks or struggle for many months, even years, before they understand the language.

Coding is hard. It's frustrating, enraging and depressing. You will have to sit at a place staring at a computer screen trying to figure out an error that made your code not to compile successfully. You can spend hours and even days trying to fix this bug. You will visit stack overflow, YouTube, Reddit, blogs and read documentation and still won't solve it. Sometimes you will question if this is the right career choice. Sometimes you will feel like picking up your computer and flinging it across the room. There are times you will even contemplate suicide. Trust me I've been there.

Coding is very difficult. If you are lazy, just don't waste your time learning to code. Learn a trade or learn some other skill like writing. If you are the type that doesn't like being alone for long, don't bother learning to code, because you will end up getting bored and dumping the career path.

Coding requires a very high intellect and acute problem solving skills. If you are not good with logic, don't waste your time learning to code. If basic maths topics like basic calculus and algebra confuses you, don't waste your time learning to code because you clearly don't have a brain for it.

A word is enough for the wise.

So the summary of your post is too discourage people who would want to learn or what.

You did biochemistry you crammed alot of pathway and u succeeded

What makes coding different

One with passion for something can never back out from a goal
Newbies into coding if you have passion for it don't listen to op.

LoL I think being a doctor is so much more difficult than being a programmer. It's just that Nigeria has destroyed the prestige of the medical profession but you can't compare it at all.

Nobody should get discouraged by reading the OP's post.

I don't have a high intellect and I don't know basic calculus and I'm doing fine learning to code.

Learning to code is frustrating but it gets easier

Speaking from my own experience, I think coding is harder than Medicine. To be a doctor, just read the textbooks very well and know how to memorize information, then apply that to the giving problem. It's straight forward. If you have at least average intelligence and you study well, you will pass your MBBS exams. There are no gotchas. It doesn't require any exceptional logical skill..

With coding, you can spend months reading documentation, watching tutorials, but when you try to apply what you have learned to a given problem, you realize you don't really know anything. The learning path isn't linear. You will jump from here to there and back again just to understand an aspect of the language you are learning.

Probably for medical school. Things get more difficult especially as you start to specialise. Can you compare the hardest part of coding to something like neurosurgery.

This is how to be a good medical student. Different kettle of fish, being an actual doctor. And I don't mean some folks that wear lab coat to prescribe Doxycycline or Chloroquine. I mean DOCTORS.

In medicine, the margins for error are minimal; you f.uck around, you end a life.

In software engineering/development/coding/programming, you basically have different methods of approaching a problem; the worst that can happen is being stuck on a problem that makes you vent on social media on how hard it is.

Sofware engineering is just as important, a bug could launch a nuke or even cause a plane crash.

Mankind can exist without software engineers; Mankind will go extinct without medicine.

I honestly don't think software engineering is generally "harder".

I respect doctors a lot. The only reason I didn't bother going to study medicine is cause my mom is a doctor and she never had money. We were always poor growing up. If we grew up in a good country where doctors were respected and well paid that's what I would have done to he honest.

Very difficult to point this out without people thinking you're trying to discourage them.

They'd shy away from reality and embrace fantasies.

Programming is not easy simple... You only start feeling it's easy after months of practice.

Then you'd hit one roadblock again especially if you're learning something new n you'd get frustrated because it's not easy.

It's fun to do but not easy to do especially if you're in for the money and not love for it.

Not just any but if you were on a good computer science degree course and you have a passion for coding as you do now, you will not find it hard but fun, but learning as a self taught then programming is not easy.

In a good computer science degree course you will be taught how to develop your logic skills, how to understand language syntax, how to debug your code, how to gather requirements from clients, software methodologies, how to design and model your clients requirements before you start coding and how to research to find new solutions. Though I did my software engineering degree overseas so I'm not sure how computer science degrees are taught back home.

My only disappointment is that after a degree in computer science you find that most organisations around the world do not value a candidate with a computer science degree because it is not regulated and so you find a self taught programmer interviewing you as the self taught have risen to become a team lead or manager and would make it almost impossible for you with a computer science degree to get the programming job as I have noticed that most self taught programmers have a bias towards those with an computer science degree.

If I decide to go back to uni now I would prefer to study Pharmacy or Medicine as I'm guaranteed that a self taught Pharmacist or a self taught medical Doctor will not be the one to interview me. Also I will be able to use my software engineering knowledge to write new and improved applications for the medical sector in my spare time.

Yeah. Read about it.

Boeing outsourced to some cheap coders to write software for the MCAS.

If certain parameters were met, push nose of the plane down.

That’s all.

So software kept pushing plane nose down.

2 planes crashed, 346 people died.

I used to be an accountant and switched to web development in 2020. Coding isn't that difficult if you understand your learning style, I didn't have a mentor as I learn best on my own.

From ur post maybe u tried to learn Almost everything at the same time, I always advice people I train u dnt need to master or know every syntax in a programming language that will be insane. Take baby steps and know ur learning style while practicing little by little if u learn better in classroom environment look for a mentor.

I have been able to teach myself html, css, bootstrap, JavaScript, jQuery, react.js, php, python, sql, bumpy and panda excluding content management systems like WordPress, joomla I use also in just 2 years and 6 months from August 2020 till now.

Note:
I didn't learn all dese at the same time neither do I know every single syntax in those languages, in all these i took time to master JavaScript but just learned the others so that I can manipulate their syntax and expand my knowledge. Do I need to learn all dese technologies to be a good developer? No, there are people that have landed good jobs with just html, css and JavaScript (react or angular) only.

My advice:
1.) If u are really passionate about Tech or web development take time to learn the basics one step at a time and build ur way from there.

2) Dnt focus on learning too many things at the same time u will get confused.

3) If u are a classroom learner and u cannot learn things urself look for a physical mentor to train u.

4) Do not try to cram every syntax in a programming language or mark up language, google is ur friend.

Lastly, Coding isn't for everyone take out time to discover if it is for u or not. Dnt discourage anyone here coding has opened doors for me and I dnt think I would be going back to being an accountant anymore.

the fact that most people think coding is an easy path is what still sound awkward to me, copying and pasting of codes is easy building and copying easys tuffs is easy, y'all aint solving problems or building enterprise applications thats why y'all think coding is simple, i start coding since 2017, and since then till now am proficient in 12 programming languages, but still yet it came with alot of dedication, insults, attemted suicide, scattering of my laptop, shouting in the midnight only me becuz of bugs, been hospitalize in hospital because of eyes issue, locking myself from morining till night, the fact hear is that actual codders have story to tell, if you even think that common CSS aint hard you are just joking, but with how tough it is with dedication and hardwork you would opvercome all that, it's just like a season,. now codding aaint even a work for me , it more like hubby for me now, this me saying all this as someone proficient in web development, app development, blockchain development and artificial intelligence,... thank you and goodluck coders

Speaking as a pharmacist, coding is way harder than Pharmacy school.

And I say this as a Uniport pharmacy graduate.
If you know about Uniport and their Pharm school, you'd understand that it is by far the HARDEST COURSE TO STUDY in Uniport.

Yet, everything I did pales in comparison to coding.
When I say coding, I mean real coding and the accompanying DSA.

All my pharmacology, pharmacognosy, pharmaceutics and the rest pales greatly compared to coding.

Most medical and pharmacy school courses have to do with rote memorization.
In pathology for example, once you're able to understand the aetiology, pathogenesis and clinical manifestations of a disease, you'd have no problem answering the applied questions.

The only reason why Pharm and Ned school is seen as hard is because you have to learn - and memorize (cram) - a lot within a short amount of time.

As a DevOps Engineer, I dare say that Pharmacy and medicine has got nothing on tech in terms of being truly hard.

For a fact, coding is hard. But you saying coding is tougher than medicine is WRONG.

Why do you think folks who were known as the most intelligent in secondary school often get humbled by medicine. And many of them even struggle not to be kicked out from med school.

No matter how complex machine learning as a field is, its complexity is nothing compared to a field like neurosurgery or cardiology.

Why is the path to becoming a doctor a long and rigorous one? Why aren't doctors made in 9 months to 2 years.

You're just an advanced learner in this thing called coding. You must have learned one or two during your self-taught coding journey.

All you have to do is just encourage complete newbies never to come with a mindset that coding is an easy-peasy get rich quick scheme.

And like what Caveadullam once said in his post. Anything hard can be made simple by increasing the amount of time you spend learning that thing. It's true with coding and medicine.
